Last night on his way home from dinner, dad came off second best when a dog ran out in front of him on his Deauville. He launched on the brakes, was only doing 15-20km/h when he hit the dog. Went down on the left side of the bike, thank goodness for crash bars and panniers! Unfortunately he was wearing NT safety gear, shorts, polo shirt and runners, no gloves!
Wouldn't have been too bad if he wasn't on blood thinners. The bark off will hurt for a while, but is not life threatening. The broken rib is also a bit tender but not major. The big problem is the haematomas. Where a "normal" person would just have some nasty bruises, he has massive lumps on his hip, side and shoulder from the bleeding under the skin. I finally left the hospital at around 3am after they had him stabilised and his blood pressure back up to safe levels.
I'm really hoping he learns his lesson from this, and wears all the gear from here on in, but somehow I don't think so. He reckons at nearly 78 he's too old to change his habits.

He may well change his mind after Danae (Blue Owl) has a chat to him though..... she's not happy with him
