My dad came a cropper....
« on: May 18, 2015, 12:29:34 PM »
Last night on his way home from dinner, dad came off second best when a dog ran out in front of him on his Deauville.  He launched on the brakes, was only doing 15-20km/h when he hit the dog.  Went down on the left side of the bike, thank goodness for crash bars and panniers!  Unfortunately he was wearing NT safety gear, shorts, polo shirt and runners, no gloves!

Wouldn't have been too bad if he wasn't on blood thinners.  The bark off will hurt for a while, but is not life threatening.  The broken rib is also a bit tender but not major.  The big problem is the haematomas.  Where a "normal" person would just have some nasty bruises, he has massive lumps on his hip, side and shoulder from the bleeding under the skin.  I finally left the hospital at around 3am after they had him stabilised and his blood pressure back up to safe levels.

I'm really hoping he learns his lesson from this, and wears all the gear from here on in, but somehow I don't think so.  He reckons at nearly 78 he's too old to change his habits. :|||| :|||| :|||| :|||| :|||| :|||| :|||| :|||| :|||| :|||| :||||

He may well change his mind after Danae (Blue Owl) has a chat to him though..... she's not happy with him :well :cuss :well :cuss

That's not good Wendy, I have done the same duck down to the servo to fill up for next days ride
We must all remember if you are on the bike no matter how far you go always wear your protective gear
It happens so many times 5 minutes from home, Good on Blue Owl
It's a lesson for all of us  :think1 :well :-(((

Ouch!
The haematomas should gradually be re-absorbed but the skin off will be pretty painful.  The rib won't let him laugh a lot for a while.  %^&* dogs!!
Like you say, he's getting a bit old to teach new tricks.  And we all know how hot ATGATT is!
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

One good thing about Canberra in Winter is that you never see dogs out and about in the evening - too cold.
The cold doesn't bother the roos, through. I narrowly missed a large one at 8 am in the suburbs.

Does that mean Danae's  donning the  boxing gloves to box grandad round the ears for being a silly old beggar had to use that term as the other one would have got me in trouble if you get my drift.

I wonder... Can you teach an old dog new tricks?

Hopefully he's being discharged from hospital today.  He has strict instructions from the surgeons that he is not allowed to ride until he has had his heart surgery, there is just too big a risk with the blood thinners he is on if he has a really big off.  He's pretty sore from the bruising and the cracked rib, hasn't said a word about all the bark he's missing though :-X :-X :-X.....wonder why???? :well :well

Does that mean the spare room is taken while your dad recovers?
Just wonderin'

He insisted on going home, so I'll just have to check in on him every day and get his neighbours to keep an eye out too.

Good news, he is probably better off at home mentally if he relaxes a bit. Insisting on signing out just sounds so familiar to me! Hope he behaves a bit more, but you know what bikers are like...

The hospital discharged him, he insisted on going to his place, not staying with me for a few days.  I went and saw his neighbours last night so they're going to keep and eye out for him

Most accidents happen within 5 km of home

so I'm moving to a new house 10 km away.

What a guy your Dad is, go man!!!
At my age you realise something very important, then ten minutes later you've forgotten it.
