Best I can find in the manual for the 1100:-

Thermostat begins to open @ 80 to 85C and should be fully open at 95C

The fan should start when temp reaches from 98-102 and turn off when it gets back down to 93-97C

Usually if the gauge indication is within the normal operating range you should be ok.

My fan usually kicks in when the needle is in line with the thermometer.

So at what age does this "old enough to know better" kick in?

At 4C, you will most likely not see the needle move. I have ridden to work in those temps here in West Oz, and the needle is lucky to move off the white mark. The airflow around the engine is sufficient to keep it cool, you will feel some warmth around your feet. Now stop worrying and ride.

The temperature guage will barely move above the white line in cold weather when riding, may take ages to go higher when stationary. If it does not get above the white line it is usually a thermostat problem, staying open a bit.

Hi kiwisteed, Just back from over there and have 2000 st 1100 there and our bike just gets over white line unless in Auck traffic Fri 500pm and moves up bit more but not enough to run fan. You guys have best riding roads and all so close to wherever you go. May catch you there sometime. Denis Diane Gibson. Philip Island.

Denis, I'm in the South Island where I reckon the roads are even better, even quake damaged Christchurch roads are getting ironed out . The South is way less congested than the North Island, I friggin hate Auckland traffic lol....
