ST replacement ?

Even though I'm perfectly happy with my ST1300, one might need to consider eventually and one day  to buy a brand new one.

 Problem: they are built no longer! But who seriously would turn in their ST1300 for a new 2015 CTX1300 as that thing is now called. They have even been running out of acrylic to provide a proper windscreen. What went into them? Any thoughts guys? Would CTX riders be welcome in this forum?

It's a question that we all ask ourselves......for us if we could not  find a low mileage ST1300 in the best colour  we would seriously look at the Trophy.....many aspects of the wing appeal......but the screen, fuel range and some servicing issues would do my head in......still a gorgeous bike though

The Trophy did well in the Australian Motorcyclist Mag #28.  Value for money it beat the BMW K1600 ($8500 cheaper).  Its theoretical 432 km range beat the other 4 (BMW, Ducati Multistrada, Kwaka 1400 and FJR1300).  It was 4th in power, but it could rightly be said you can't use the power of the top 3.  It needs a topbox , but only the Duke comes with one.

I would have to agree with Chris, if we went away from the ST1300, the Triumph Trophy would have to be seriously considered, the wing seems to be a way down the track yet.....

I'm partial to a late 1500 model or an early model 1800 wing if it comes time to replace the 1100; with the trophy in there as another option. There is of course the option to give the 1100 a serious makeover which is still on the cards but nothing is decided yet.

By the time my ST1300 needs replacing, I might be looking for a lighter touring bike.  The BMW F800GT could be an option, and Honda has nothing in light tourers as it looks like the Deauville has been dropped from the range.

I just read the Australian Motorcyclist Mag report.  Looks like fair comments really. There are a few wrong bits for the Trophy (may be for the other bikes as well).  Actual range for me at touring speeds one up is a minimum of 500kms on faster roads with headwinds, out of 26 litres. It is easy to get 580 plus range at lower average speeds. 91 RON is what the bike runs on best. Minor service intervals are 16,000km, major 32,000kms.

Cruise control is limited to 160kph indicated (it reads 6% fast), only an issue in some places

Unless your hell bent on replacing the ST with another fully faired tourer the adventure bike segment is also worth a look.  There's quite a few big bore, shaft drive adv bikes with ample luggage carrying capacity and roomy perches for the pillion plus all the techno bells and whistles.

I still have a soft spot for fully faired tourers but after owning an adv bike for a while now they make a lot of sense for Australian riding conditions.  I've found them to be just as comfortable on long hauls but a lot more versatile in regards to where you can take them.  It just adds another dimension to my travels.

But here's the kicker in this topic. Lots of knockers in this place but I haven't seen one of you actually post about riding the things yet. All ill informed speculation about a model of bike with very few on the roads.

If your measure of the qualities of a bike are formed off a few photos and even fewer / no, on the roads experience then its floored.


My next bike will be a mid sized semi naked and the ST will most probably be the trade in unit....or I might get a RocketIII.

I looked at all the options for an older rider and finally decided on a Yamaha 1200 ST . The return trip to Toowoomba and several on and off road trips since certainly validated my choice. Standard 260kg Shaft drive , 6 speed, cruise control, abs, traction control, 2 throttle modes, heated grips, fly by wire, 23lt tank, luggage and electronic suspension all for around $24,000.
No more problems with roadworks, poorly maintained Australian Roads that are only going to get worse , or dirt road short cuts.
Comfortable for me with a great riding position and great handling  my ST 1300 was giving me thigh cramps. Economical and smooth with an inline 1200cc twin and a 270 degree crank throw ( same as the TDM and TRX ).
The big advantages of riding dirt roads in WA are they are well maintained and sometimes smoother than than some of the sealed roads, not much traffic or trucks, and no Radar traps.
Basically what I am saying is there are more options out there, not every town has a Triumph, BMW, or Harley dealer. But most have Honda, Yamaha or Suzuki dealers.

Mitch your a post is a mirror of my thoughts on the way I feel about the ST1300. Even before I got this bike I had hi opinions of the s10 for my preferred ride.

The ST has been good for me and I now enjoy the benefits of hard luggage for instance and just turning the tap to pass whatever. Even the benefits of a fairing. But I don't like the disadvantages of the fairing when it comes to simple maintenance which I do myself or the cost hassle of the time spent taking it of for a major service at am MCdealer.

Don't get me started on roadwork misbehaviour as you have noted already.

To be honest guys, horses for courses and everyone expects something different from their ridding experience or needs. Believe it or not you can get good and wet on a faired bike too...you just haven't been in enough rain to find that yet.

I can vouch that you really can get good and soaked if you are out for a few days in pouring rain and flooded roads. In lighter less persistent rain most gear will be ok for a while, especially on a faired bike.

Saw a mention of lighter bikes back there. Got nothing but praise, except for one issue, about my bmw F700gs
Did a 1600 to Melb and another to Cairns. Two up it was great down the coast from Brisbane across the snowies and into Ballarat. Helen says just as comfy but getting on is a bit harder as the pillion pegs are much higher.
Just changed tyres to Michelin Annakees and handling is scaring me. Hits corners outside my courage level and doesn't flinch.
Only gripe is the screen size but that'll change soon.
