Cooling Fans Overrun?

Do you mean Override ?? So the ability to add a switch to bring the fan/fans into play earlier ??

There is no facility to overide the fans thermo switch to bring the fan on early, that is fitted to the bike. However its relatively easy to fit a switch than can perform that function, though not normally needed.

The factory switch seems to be set pretty effectively, and they have proven quite reliable.

Hi ALL, many thanks for your responses. I should have made my question clearer I think.

I am thinking of an automatic cooling fans overrun such as occurs on some bikes so long as the stat dictates & whether the ignition is on or not. Apparently this was the arrangement on the 650 Deauville & the ST1100? Ed.

The st1100 fans only work with ignition on. Not much point having the fans going when engine not running as the coolant is not circulating (it might a bit from convection currents but nowhere near like when running). Most cars are also like this. If the cooling system is operating properly should be no need.

I think it's only Buells that have that "run-on" feature.  And we know how weird they are!

The wiring changes needed to perform this would be a bit of a challenge, and unless you are well versed in the dark arts of bike electrics, then trying to do it is fraught with danger.

The STs dont run hot, so having the fan come on to cool the radiator (thats all it would achieve) would be a waste of time and effort. Something else to consider, is the drain on the battery, as its a small battery you dont want it drained and be unable to restart when you most need it.

Many Thanks John ,Biggles & Brock. The recent overheating problem(failed cooling fans relay) has been cleared but left me a little wary of a repeat performance! This latest query was only the scoping of further information really.
Will probably settle for a," fans on" light until full confidence is restored.Ed.(Old Woman!)

my 1100 switch died while trying to find the boat to Tassie. got a toggle switch from supercheap and bypassed it. done beside road, no choice.

Mine failed in Norseman last year and fixed it by using a "Yorkie" ..... pretty certain that a Wombat, Turtle, and a Hoffy had some input as well
