Pannier lid replacement

Hi guys, I have need to replace a right side lid on the pannier. I am obtaining quotes now but thought the brains trust of Ozstoc might be able to steer me in the right direction for the best deal.

Alan, It's an achilles black 2008 model. Lid just shattered when a mate on a beamer couldn't stop quick enough and his awkward boxer engine clipped the pannier!

I had to replace the left lid about 12 months ago.  Found one on ebay that didn't match the colour of my bike so I got it painted locally and it was still about $450 cheaper than a new one!

They are hard to come by, as they are one of the first things to be broken.  I bought a second hand one of someone who was on the original list to eventually replace my right hand one, which is patched up.

I haven't been able to find a good replacement on any sites so I have ordered a new lid from Japan through the best supplier I could find.
I am riding to Montville this Saturday with half a roll of duct tape holding the lid pieces together.

Have you thought about taking it to a plastics welder, they should be able to stick it together, and then a good coat of paint will hide the repairs.

My St1300 fell over while closing the gate on Monday damaging the left Mirror Cover. Did an extensive search and this link was here in the OzSTOC Forum. Contacted them and they were very helpful, cheaper than the local honda dealer and by the time you add postage from overseas they were still cheaper.

These guys in USA are nearly half the price of the Oz supplier.  They have been mentioned here before, and I've had very good service from them:

Forget about a coat of paint hiding anything!  The spraypaint they use these days to get that beautiful deep finish even shows the primer/undercoat!!  It's basically transparent, showing all the layers, hence the nice sparkly bits.  You would get away with it with a dense colour like police white, I guess.  But not the ST1300 colours.

For Candy Glory Red, it has to be light Grey primer/undercoat. If you start with dark, it just gets much darker.  My mirror cover ended up looking like the Burgundy red when painted over the existing Candy red.  I'll have to strip it back, prime it and then start again with the five coats of colour and five of clear.

No wonder the car body shop wanted $400 for my pannier repaint.

Black should work as a mask to hide repairs, then use the grey primer. I seem to recal a painter telling me that, works for house walls as well.

Just before I got my 1300 the previous owner managed to forget to lock the top box on and it parted company with the bike halway round a corner. Did quite a lot of superficial damage to the corners etc and stuffed the paint job. I took it to the Barry Mills paint shop in Ipswich and they filled the gouges, rebuilt the corners and resprayed it for me for $150, and did damned fine job. So it can be done if you find the right people!

Almost worth riding to Ipswich!  I sanded etc mine, paid nearly $90 for the 4 pressure packs and still ended up with a fine orange peel finish, no matter how hard I tried to avoid it.

Mate, they did a perfect job, smooth as a baby's rump and shiney as ...well Shiney! Can't tell it was ever trashed and resurrected. Took them about three days, but well worth the wait.
