HISTORY: KAWASAKI LEGEND, Z1 900 - NEW YORK STEAK
  BY MICK WITHERS

Looking at the thousands of different motorcycle models released since Gottlieb Daimler went for a ride in 1885, it is fair to say that few models have created anywhere near the cult following and legendary status of the Kawasaki Z1.

Long before the Internet arrived to allow anyone to be an instant expert, there were myths and rumours flying around the motorcycle world about the pre-production Z1s and their capabilities. If you believed all that you heard, those pre-1972 bikes were able to run 10-second quarter mile ETs and top 150mph before Kawasaki engineers detuned them.

I'd also recommend clicking HERE if you'd like to read a number of "reviews" of other motorcycles from back in the good ol' days...  :thumbs

Absolutely loved the Z1 but ended up buying a Ducati 860 GTS. What was I thinking??   :fp
Getting wind in my hair while I still have some.

We have the only surviving Z1 of the original 4 which arrived in December 1972 as test bikes in the York Motor Museum, unfortunately we are closed at the moment.

So at what age does this "old enough to know better" kick in?
I believe in the "hereafter", every time I go to the shed I have to think "what am I here after"

A few years ago I caught up with a Z1 while riding in the Adelaide Hills.   I sat close behind it for ages, just listening to the music of the engine.   :thumbsup
