ST making buzzing noise on right side at high speed and rpm
« on: October 18, 2021, 03:00:02 PM »
I just recently re-registered my ST and on my 1st ride I went past 5k rpm and 90kmh and the bike started a noise I never heard before. I removed my ear plugs to get a better understanding what goes on but all what I can conclude is a loud buzzing noise on the right side which stops when I drop the speed below 90k. If I keep speed above this the noise is continues and no change of pitch with speed/rpm variation, any suggestion will be much appreciated because at the moment I am lost for any idea for further investigation. At 80k the bike runs smooth and no extra noise at all.

Could be  the RH exhaust shield with a crack at the front bolt hole..Not uncommon.

Could it be something in the pie warmer or a crack in the Tupperware vibrating?

Pie warmer?

The temps in the glove boxes get very high  (hence Pie Warmers), to the point where I was reluctant to store anything like wallet, camera, credit cards etc.  Good for tools, cleaning cloths etc

I see. I haven't noticed that yet, because I keep gloves in one and a hat in the other.

Thanks for your replies but a cracked exhaust would make a different noise and specially it would change with power setting which it does not do. I will try to record the noise and may that will help.

A cracked exhaust would behave like this, you are quite correct, but a cracked and loose heatshield might be a different story, and Brock did suggest that the heatshield crack was a common fault.

I have never heard of a cracked exhaust, but currently have a cracked heat shield. Its a bit of work to get it off for 10 seconds with the Mig..
