Long term review - Dunlop Roadsmart 4
« on: July 23, 2024, 02:33:45 PM »
Hi all,

Have 8,500kms on the Roadsmarts. They tip in waaay quicker than the michelin road 5 GTs that I replaced them with.

At 8,500kms the rear tyre has developed a flat spot. And it's been terrible in rain for at least 1,000kms now. It slips on wet roads like they are icy. Depends on the tarmac type but anything new and smooth is the worst as it's virtually a slick in the middle.

The rear is 90% gone and I'd say the front is close 70%. I only use the bike for long distancing commuting, so no sports riding.

I'll keep it on until 10k but I can only ride in the dry.

The michelins gave great wet grip until they wore out completely. Although they did cup significantly more. The rear had 17,000kms on it too. So twice the mileage compared to the dunlops. But the michelin did suffer a flat as its a much softer tyre than the dunlop. I change tyres in my shed and the michelin was as easy as push bike tyre. The dunlop a bit harder.

So loved the dunlops new but they wear out twice as fast as the michelins. And then there's the wet grip. The dunlops have never been as good. But they turn in sooo nice. With the michelins on you had to push it into a turn. The dunlops were way sportier.

Anyway, that's my 10cents.

Going to try pirelli gts next as I don't like how the michelins felt and I want a tyre to last longer than 8,000kms, so won't be getting the dunlops again. That and their wet grip has been bum clenchingly awful the last few rides. Fine in the dry though

I never liked the Dunlops for the wet and distance. The Michies felt far better, wet and dry and distance. I have used several sets over the years.

Interesting...  :think1

Are you still running 42psi front and rear, prricey?
I reckon you might need to crank the pressure up a bit.
I run 46psi and my tyre is still in pretty good shape with probably double the k's (or more) on it...  :think1

Rustynuts,

I have run stock pressure in them. As I did with the Michelin PR5 GTs before. I was nervous about higher pressure in these cold months on wet roads.

Have been looking at  Bridgestone T32s in the GT variant as well but they also don't seem to last as well as the Michelins. To be honest I think I baulked at the road 6 price of $389 for just the rear tyre. That's extraordinary.  But if they give twice the kms, I might go that way.

I learnt years ago manufacturer recommended pressures are usually a compromise between comfort and handling.

I'm happy to put up with a slighter harsher ride in our cars so I run 38psi all round and find they handle better and, as far as the bike is concerned, I haven't noticed any downside to running the higher pressures, especially as I've mentioned previously, I'm no lightweight.

Anyhow, I look forward to seeing which way you swing, tyre wise...
Cheers  :popcorn

FWIW, I found the Pirellis wore quicker than the Michelins, and were similar in handling.  Only ever tried one pair because Michies weren't available.

So Michelins it is then. How much is a kidney worth these days on the black market?  :grin

Wow!  Ours would be worth a fair bit less, Rusty, but I could buy an ST1800 and still get some change for a couple of services and new tyres!

 :rofl

Sounds like a plan!  :thumbs

My kidneys are lightly used so maybe I could get a Moto Guzzi V100 Mandello as well?  :think1  :X

11,000kms on the set now. Interestingly the front is wearing as quick, if not quicker than the rear.

They're still handling quite well. The rear has a slight flat spot now but you can definitely still throw the bike around.

About 80% gone so I have ordered a set of michelins because I need to get the most kms out. Got PR6s online for $460 for a set on ebay. Ebay had a special on.

I'd have the dunlops again in an instant if I wasn't doing 20,000km a year.

Before anyone chimes in, I idid say the rear was toast at 8,000kms but it's  basically stayed the same depth in the last 3000kms! Getting there now. But difficult to tell exactly. They're about 1mm above the rwc marks on both front and rear.

I've got a Pirelli Angel GT2 (170/60/17) on the rear and  GT on the front at the moment (ST1100). I went this way as the load index is slightly higher than the Michelins.  Initial impressions are mixed. Not the same confidence as I had with the Bridgestones it came with. They feel a bit skatey.
Next set will be Michelins. I've always had a good run with them.
