Roads to ride
« on: October 24, 2012, 06:08:35 PM »
An adventurous workmate has a desire to ride from Western Sydney to Jenolan Caves and then onto Oberon via the Jenolan Caves road, but isn't sure if this road is fully sealed (neither am I for that matter).
Does anyone here have knowledge of this road?
He also has this idea to ride on from Oberon to Mittagong, but looking at Google maps, the only way I can see is via Goulburn.
If he goes via Taralga, will he keep on the black stuff or run across dirt roads too?

Black stuff all the way.  If you go to Taralga on the 17/18th November you can see their Heritage Rally (bloody great)

I'm going with some friends, look at the rally and then camp on the Abercrombie river somewhere that night.

Anyone is welcome to join us.

Cheers

Taralga via wombeyan caves to mittagong is definately dirt,
I rode this last year 2up on a suzuki 1200 bandit,
badly rutted, wash outs across entire road, lots of pot holes over 300mm deep, single lane and fallen rocks litter this road.
I had a ball, pillion wasn't too impressed though, hit one of the ruts and sent him about a foot off the seat.
Very funny moment when i turned to see his eyes all bugged out. :crackup

Taralga via Wombeyan caves to Mittagong is definitely dirt,

That's right, what Sargent1971 said, however, if you go pass the caves turn off, you'll end up at Goulburn, all bitumen.

go into website "whereis" and enter Katoomba, via Taralga, Goulburn

Start Katoomba, NSW
Via1 Taralga, NSW
End Goulburn, NSW
Distance: 214km Time: 2hr 49min (approx)

I went that way back from the national meet.  It is fully sealed, but the section going up from Jenolan Caves is steep with tight corners, so you just have to hope that a car is not coming down as on the bike you have to take a line through the corners that takes you across the road a bit.  Interesting road though.  Last time in the 80s I did it the road was gravel, and we were coming down.  Keep on going towards Oberon until you get to Butter Factory Lane or Shooters Hill Road.  If he stays on the road to Taralga it is all sealed. I went the more exciting way on gravel roads until I met up with Shooters Hill Road.

I have been on the Bannaby Road from Taralga for quite a while to a mates place, but don't know if it is sealed all the way to Marulan or the Canyonleigh Road.

That'd be good to watch. I'm jealous.
The overnighter sounds good too.
P.S. Thanks Dave, Robert and Saaz for the great road report too
