I'm not sure we'll make it to Ballarat.    I deferred taking Chris to New Zealand so that we could "do" Middleton, and it may be payback time in March 2014.     Hhhmmmmm..... I wonder if we could take the bike over the ditch.   :think1

There are a few rental companies there recommended by The Bear.  The cost of getting your bike there and back, plus the logistics of delivering it to the consignment locations plus the insurance over there etc etc might make hiring well worthwhile.
If you're really lucky they'll have STs to hire.

Thanks Sabie, you're making life very difficult!   We are planning on a few weeks in a camper van, and the reality is that the NZ bike dream may have to wait.

It's a bit rude that they charge extra for the panniers since they're standard on the bike.  I can understand asking more money for the topbox, since they're quite expensive.

I can remember a conversation with Barry about buying an ST1100 to leave over there and we did a share for hire between the group....

I am keen to talk Teela into an NZ trip for our honeymoon  :thumb just pondering the best time of year to go

So why do we have to downgrade to an 1100?  :butt  :nahnah :grin

I'm not an expert, but I'd think any time from September to March (and there's a likelihood of very cool days included there).  They do have the occasional hot Summer day, but you can't plan for that.

NZ School Term 1 for 2014 is the 27th Jan to the 17th April, which may be the best time to go.
Average Summer maximum temp for Christchurch is about 22 degrees. (I don't want to be there in winter)
