ST1100 cooling
« on: November 15, 2013, 02:29:41 PM »
My 98 ST1100 hasn't got a lot of k's on it, but I noticed before the recent Toowoomba RTE that the coolant level was down. I went for a ride today and when near home I stopped at Aldi and noticed coolant under the bike. Once i got home I had a closer look noticed coolant drops and this:

Now where did that come from I wonder? Could it be the cause of the coolant loss?
Only one way to find out...,

On my 96 model I had a radiator cap problem (the rubber seal had started to crack) and the overflow hose had cracked. These lead to coolant going out of the radiator but not being sucked back in, so the radiator level goes down.

Leaks that I had were due to a cracked elbow.  Slightly loose hose clamps on the hoses under the carbs are not unknown.  When I did the elbow I replaced all the hoses with generic ones.  The smaller hose that goes from under the carbs up to the radiator cap was really hard and could have failed any thime, so I was glad the leak happened at home.

It will be interesting to see what you find.  I have had cars with more troubles with the cooling system than the ST.

:dred11 my 98 ST had a similiar experience just before FR#26. I replaced what I thought was needed a new hose only to find out it was the elbows in the 'V' under the carbies, had cracked, I replaced  the part and no more water loss or heat increase.

hope you it solved.

We have 4 vehicles at the moment and only one is on the road and it was the one we were going to sell!! LOL.
So, bike will be down until I sort this problem.. not sure if it stands out in the photo but there is a small bolt caught between the frame and radiator. When I raised the handlebars and removed the plastic cowl from around the ignition switch it put the bolts back in the bike even tho they were no longer used. I think one eventually vibrated out and the bolt in the photo may be it.

No Rodd, the first 1 I replaced  also cracked, probly when they removed it at wreckers :|||| .so back to the wreckers and I removed the second one and fitted it without cracking it,

It is not unknown for the fan to get stuck if something wedges in there.  I am sure you find all sorts of spare bolts and screws.. some may be mine!

I've taken a lot of the plastics off and took the radiator cap off and I'm relieved that it is still full of coolant.  :o
Most of the spillage seems to be nearer the coolant bottle, so more investigation.

My overflow hose was cracked and caused a leak, I cut back about 25mm, when I tried to put it back on it split for about 50mm so I replaced the hose.

Ok, thanks. I'll check it out more tomorrow. I'm glad I saw the bolt sitting there and I'm more glad that the radiator appears ok. While I've got the plastics off I may as well see what I can add to the bike. I want to take power to the dash area, so I'll run a decent cable there. Also, I can drain the coolant and flush it out and put some new stuff in there.

The overflow hose was weak near the radiator cap. I don't think that it was leaking there but I cut about 25mm off and the rest was good and pliable. Where it connects to the bottom of the overflow tank it had taken the shape of the tanks pipe, so I cut it back 10mm and refitted it. I also remove the overflow tank and washed it out. Then I put some water in it and blew some pressure into it to make sure that it wasn't leaking out the small pipe at bottom. All good, so refitted it all. I shone a torch onto the rear of the radiator and it looks good.
Now what else can I do while it's apart?  :think1

I'm thinking... running cables to wings for LEDs.. same for the mirror covers.
Also, LED to light the oil level window.. maybe one behind the radiator overflow tank to highlight it's level... momentary push-button in the lockable compartment..
Dash shelf.. new custom cover for the ignition switch area...

Just brain storming...  |-i

Evenin' All...

JohnnyYTED...just wondering if you still have either of those broken coolant elbows?

If so would you be up for sending either one of them to me please?  I would need both pieces please. And no, I am not contemplating TiG em back together.

Ta.

Oh, a common cause of leakage from the over-flow from the header tank to the res, is getting the breather from the res 'pinched' behind the res and the frame....just a thought.

Cheers the can ;-)

I still have my broken one, and the other original one seemingly unbroken.  And some old thermostats and caps if you really want my old broken bits.

Evenin' Chaps,

Ta for the prompt replies, much appreciated.

John (saaz), I forgotten that U had them too...so OK, I'll that your bits if's OK -/c you please. JohnnyYTED, I am planning to replicate them in hi-temp ABS plastic, so those thermostat housing and cap are attractive as they're much easier to get at if I need to make repairs, which I am sure I will need to :'(

First I will need to draw them up them up in Solid Edgeyy. Recent work with these plastics has (is), very encouraging. The material I know will work, the weak link is the author of this diatribe...but nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Experimental technology for an ageing idiot . Ozstoc's bugle player has thrown me the challenge Wot thuh

Cheers Dick :-)

I will probably send off tomorrow afternoon, as Lionel is coming over for a rear tyre change in the morning.  And I have to play around with one of those Hinkley triple things as well..what do you do with a bike with only 100kms on it, it is beyond my experience!
