There are still a few of the original Golden Fleece statues around in the country areas.  I admit to being around and paying 18c a litre or so to fill up my first bike, all less than $2 worth.

I was a kid in Rockhampton when I first remember seeing the yellow plastic sheep on the bowsers.  I think they were the ones who claimed to have "Active-8" as a terrible pun that meant you car worked if you used it.

In 1968 I think I could almost fill my 1948 James up with 20 cents, not sure if that include the two stroke oil as well.

I remember the "Golden Fleece"  servos very well.    They had the best roadhouses and as a kid, and when touring we would always stop at a Golden Fleece for a meal.

How about "Neptune" Service Stations, another distant memory.

The last Golden Fleece I saw was in Tanunda (Barossa Valley) and was rebranded about 15-20 Years ago.

I haven't seen an Ampol in SA for ages and even Mobil has all but gone since the refinery in Adelaide was closed down.

There was still an independent Shell Roadhouse running in Cue, WA when we stopped there in June 2008.

Interesting to see who merged/took over as the companies progressed, and as usual although many started off as Australian Companies they are all now overseas owned.

In Brissie 7-Eleven has bought out a few brands including Mobil.  And it seems the Indians own the 7-Eleven franchise.
There are still a couple of Ampol stations here.  We also have Neumans, Liberty and Matilda as struggling independents.

The Mobil image is a pre unleaded sign. Regular/standard and super back then which equals todays ULP (91) and PULP(95)

Here's a brief time line. Quite a few surprises as well. I thought BP was all ways British Petroleum and I thought Shell was Dutch but only half right.

Good find Alan.  A few names there I'd forgotten- Phillips and Neptune for instance.  A pity it ends at 1995, because it has continued to evolve year by year.

Saw this today at some markets where they sell all that 'garage wall' stuff like number plates and nostalgic oil, petrol and old Holden tin signs etc....

I suppose some on here are just old enough to have put Amoco in their machine, with the final filter for purity.  You could see the filter in the filler line, but don't know if did anything other filter out blowflies.

My Dad worked out of the Golden Fleece in Gayndah until he bought his own servo. The Gayndah Central Service Station (Caltex) it's changed branding a few times now, I think it's a BP,

I worked the driveway as my first job and I remember Dad having the Bowsers changed to Litres which at the time was 17cents per Litre.

Excellent find Diesel!  They used to have a light inside the ram which sat on top of the bowsers.

These days they just have long signs with ideographs telling you to not use your phone (all those sparks, you know), smoke, sit on your bike, drink petrol etc etc.
