The Headlight
« on: December 11, 2013, 10:56:16 PM »
When I bought the bike I asked about there only being one headlight and was told the other was for the highbeam, sure enough when the high beam is on both are lit up.

So is it true that on the ST1300 there is only one headlight visible and both when on highbeam?

Thanks

Both globes work on both high beam and low beam.

Sounds like you have blown a low beam globe and will need to replace it.

The globes are a special Honda style globe but you can also use a H4 globe (standard high/low beam globe) but you will need to cut off one of the globe tabs to make it fit.

Original globe costs about $30, H4 about $12 and you can get it anywhere. Original are a bit hard to find.

No doubt others will throw in their personal bits of guidance.

There's a few posts about the globes etc.  for both STs and it's a matter of personal choice as to which way you go.

This is a good post for how to do it.

I'm using shims with 60/55W globes in my 1100 without any drama at the moment.

I agree with Alan's comment on being a personal choice.  Your eyes are different to everyone else, your requirements depending on the style of riding (commuting, latte runs, long distance riding etc), if you have other auxiliary lighting, night riding in animal prone areas, your reaction times at night when going from high to low beam all are considerations in choosing your lighting.

There are pro's and cons along with people who are comfortable with  OEM or upping to H4 or converting to HID.  May I also suggest checking some other sites regarding the issue of forward lighting.  The more background information you are able to obtain the more comfortable you will be with your choice.

I have never upgraded my lighting as I do very little night riding, but would look at LED lighting
If I decide to start doing some night.
Just my 2 cents worth

Bloody useless bike shop, they told me that one headlight was for low and the other was for high and now have made me a complete liar.
In cases like this I would send the bike to the shop to get fixed, how hard is it for me to do this myself?
Thanks

Changing globes is more awkward than difficult.    Find a local OzSTOC member and offer to buy them a coffee and I'm sure they will help you fit globes.   Fitting a 60/55 H4 with the two tabs cut off is no more difficult than fitting a standard globe, but you have the bonus of get extra light from a cheaper globe.

I have only ever 'bent' the H4 tabs myself, and never used the shims.
