If you want a good insight into the civil war, go looking for the series that was SBS some years ago, called the Civil War.  It was truly aweful, as most civil wars are far more brutal that nation against nation.  For the size of the US population at the time (remember the western part of the US was not very developed) was 35 million, so over a million casualties was very large.

Excellent graphics that just show how persistent the South was, as you watch the lines advance and retreat.
The casualties are horrendous.  I had no idea there were so many significant battles.

We live in such a lucky country. The nearest we ever came to civil war was a few drunken Irishmen at Eureka Stockade fighting the British Nobs over the price of a mining licence.
