Lane splitting may not be illegal in some states, but to do it you have to pass the inner car within their lane - i.e. pass them on their right but still within their lane.
If you cross the lane dividing line and pass the outside car in it's lane you are passing on the left and that's where you'll get your ticket So if you lane split and cross the dividing line between the lanes into the inside of the outside lane while still betwen the two vehicles, you're passing on the left.
The NSW lane splitting law gives us the dispensation to pass between those stationary vehicles irrespective of whether we cross the lane dividing line or not.
