Five days in the Victorian/NSW high country 2 - 7 OCT
« on: October 14, 2014, 11:41:27 AM »
Spent 2 - 7 Oct travelling the high country with Simon (Sim).  All up, including travelling to the Spirit (Tasmania) we covered 2800km of some of the best roads, best twisties, best weather you could ask for.  We were guided by Graham Harris (FarRider) from Bairnsdale on his BMW GS1200.
Report and pictures to come soon, when all sorted out.

The trip was from 2 – 7 Oct.  Myself on an ST1100, Simon on his ST1300 and Graham “Hackle” Harris on his BMW 1200 GS.  It was over 5 days and 2 days travelling from Hobart to Devonport to catch the Spirit.
I stand to be corrected by Hackle for any mistake made with this rough travel route.  The attached photos aren’t in order, alziemers or something.   The onboard photos are from Simons Go Pro.
Day 1 – from Melbourne to Myrtleford.  Took in Reefton Spur, Eildon-Jamieson Road,  C546 Murray River Road, C400 Alpine Way – Myrtelford.
Day 2 – Myrtleford to Jindabyne.  Simon hit a wombat (fatally) a short time out of Myrtleford at 9.10 a.m. damaging his lower fairing and bending the rear brake lever back.  Needed a stop at Albury at Whitfields Motorcycles for some running repairs.  Mandatory stop at Thredbo Hotel, 16 degrees, will I wear full ski gear or bathers?  People did both, depending on alcohol levels.
C546 Murray River Road, B400 Alpine Way to Jindabyne.
Day 3 – Jidabyne to Bairnsdale.  Snowy River Way, B25 Monaro Hgh, Princess Hgh, loop of Cape Conran, Marlo, Metung and lots of side roads to Hackle’s place.
Day 4 – Bairnsdale and return (big loop)  B500 Great Alpine Way to Omeo (two fantastic side roads had us chasing a deer as it ran next to us), C543 to Tangambalanga, back on C531, B500 Great Alpine Road and Bairnsdale.
Day 5 – Bairnsdale to Melbourne via every road except highway.  Glenaladale, Stockdale, Valencia Creek, lap of Glenmaggie Lake, Rawson, Buln-Buln and Melbourne.
Weather was fantastic, quality of the roads is brilliant (compared to the goat tracks we have in Tassie masquerading as highways) and importantly, company was always lively.  Would recommend this to anyone looking to cover all types of riding experiences and sceneries.  Did about 2300 kms.
I have added a link to Google Earth.  It shows a map of our trip right down to minute detail. I am not sure if it will work.

It looks like a great trip Carsten.  I've had several bike trips to the Snowy Mtns and would go back without hesitation, and your experience reminds me of just how special it is. :thumb

A mate skied Thredbo 3 weeks earlier and showed me photos of 2 foot of snow.  Therefore I packed everything I could to keep warm and didnt need it.  There was snow all around and a balmy 16 degrees, beautiful country.

You can't pick the weather up there. Can be cold, snow around, fog and then lovely sunshine. best to be prepared.

And I envy anyone who lives in Tasmania. We should just swap around every now and again....
