Something missing
« on: September 24, 2014, 08:11:24 PM »
The left weight bar or bar end has fallen (or broken) off.
It seemed loose a few days ago, so I tried tightening it, but it appeared as tight as it would go.
As I was about to come home from work today, I noticed it gone! :eek
Question; apart from protecting the left grip (and my hand) does it have any other function and is it vital to have it there?

Probably helps dampen out vibration as well.

Thanks Brock, I don't think it will be a problem getting a replacement - pre-loved, of course :p,
but needed to know will it cause me problems if it gets ridden before being drilled out and replaced.

Just be careful what you drill Peter, I think there is a threaded split nut in there, that you might not want to damage..

Pages 15-9 and 15-10 of the workshop manual for the ST1300 goes through handlebar weight installation. It seems there is an inner weight assembly as well. There is an inner weight retaining tab you can remove using a screw driver to get the inner retainer out of the hole that locates it, then use the screw you still have to pull it out. It may be that the inner weight is turning so needs something tacky on it to keep it in place.

So don't go drilling stuff juST yet!!

Another thought - perhaps the weight end just broke off, leaving the threaded hex bolt still in there which would simplify things no end.
I'll look further into it tomorrow when I have more time

And yes John and Brock, I'll explore all avenues and report back in here before doing anything!
I promise  :thumbs

After a better look, I've deduced the bolt didn't break off as first thought, but somehow unscrewed itself and fallen off so I'm rather perplexed as to how it 'fell' out as the thread is capable of taking the bolt from the other side quite tightly as I removed the right side weight end to see if it would fit the left - which it did - so I contacted Silverwater Motorcycle Wreckers here in Sydney in the hope they'd have one. They didn't. They had one from an ST1100, but that was too different to fit..

So I've ordered a set of 2 (2 weight ends and 2X95mm bolts) from Blue City Motorcycles in SA for $62.16 all up. All genuine Honda stuff.

I finally received my parts from Blue City Motorcycles only last week.
All better now - bike looks normal again - careful who I deal with now though.

Normally the handlebar ends are loctited into the bar, so a mystery why it fell out in the first place....

I've given this a lot of thought, and feel the only way it could have come out is by someone taking it out, but can't think of where it could have happened.
It was there when I rode to work, and only noticed it gone when I got back home that afternoon. As far as I'm aware, mine is the only ST1300 at work and they're all parked together near the main thoroughfare in full view of workmates

On the weekend I got to Bailingup to find my left bar end weight about to fall off. Bolt had unwound nearly all the way out. Tightened back up and all good now.
