How to minimise injuries in a crash
« on: February 25, 2015, 08:40:20 PM »
We all need to be pulled back to reality occasionally, especially when no one has had an acco for a while.
This blog has all the statistics and advice you'll need to top up your awareness reserves.

Just the usual advice, but with the facts to illustrate it.

For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

You don't have to convince me.  I came across a rider of a 250 sports bike who had been going a kilometre or so to the shops and chose to wear thongs/flip flops, short beach shorts, tee-shirt, helmet and no gloves.

A vehicle ahead of him did not have a fixed cap on it's diesel tank and diesel spilled on the roundabout.  The rider was only doing 30 km/hr or so, low sided and slid out of the roundabout into the gutter at the edge of the pavement.

He suffered:

Foot injuries from abrasion
Knee injury from abrasion, patella visible
Thigh and calf injuries from abrasion
Shoulder injuries from abrasion
Hip injuries from abrasion
Elbow injuries from abrasion
Bad hand injuries to the palms from abrasion (riders instinctively put their hands down)

And that was a relatively low speed crash, a simple slow low sider.  When I delivered him to A&E at the base hospital, the registration nurse said, "No gear?  Self inflicted injuries then."

I wore ATGATT before I saw this, and I'll always wear ATGATT now no matter what the heat.  If it's too hot to wear gear then it's too hot to ride.

Hi guys,

A sobering reminder from the website to reinforce the issues of being alert and aware of possible consequences whenever and however we ride.

Thanks Bill,

thought I was posting the right address.
This is pretty confronting. Warning that it is graphic.
