Iron Butt Rally (IBR2015)

Just an aside of interest....this years winner of the Iron Butt Rally (IBR) the echelon of Long Distance riding was on a ST1300 

An extract from the final days report:
When the scoring was finally done, checked, audited and checked again, Eric Jewell had won the 2015 Iron Butt Rally. After one DNF (2013) and seven finishes including 2nd place in 2011, Eric was finally able to scrape that monkey off his back and stomp it into the ground where it belonged. Early in Leg 2, Eric dialed the Call In number leaving a message for Tom Austin. It was a vulnerable, reflective Eric Jewell. “The only way I can beat these guys is to ride more.” In the end, that’s what it took – riding more. Eric clocked in at 7:56 AM. He had ridden 11,087 miles, 899 fewer miles than 2nd place Josh Mountain, but with 161 more points. In true Iron Butt flair, Jewell’s ST1300 was dead on arrival with the fuel pump that had plagued him throughout the final night giving out in the last 200 feet with Eric coasting into the parking lot. Even his bike left it all on the field.

That's brilliant!              

It's a mighty tough field to beat and there were only two ST1300s in it this year.  Goldwings dominated, with the usual parade of FJR1300s and various BMWs, including K1600s and RT1200s.

Mike Langford on a Trophy finished 53rd. Considering the bike was still in bits the day before leaving to get to the rally a good effort.

Please excuse a stupid question of a newcomer: I raise the very definition of " iron butt". Why is it called thus? When I ride ( and at this stage it's not that all distant) it us not my butt but my arms that fatigue.

So I am seeking your advice before I venture into something, expecting my arms to be in agony but possibly my non-iron butt  being the major victim after all - well after I have reached the point of no return and my nether regions are really in agony....
Please give me some pointers to either develop an iron butt or steel arms or what ever is more important for decent riding?

Ahhh,

You have cleared the mighty 50 post hurdle.

As to iron butt, modifying your seat can overcome that to a certain extent, as can getting off and walking around. The modified seat can also change your posture which can relieve some of the weight on the arms. Maybe elastic elbow and wrist bands could help a little.

Tired arms is generally a leaning too far forward issue. Many of us LD riders add better seats as mentioned, handle bar risers for shoulder/arm/wrist ergonomics, footpegs changed, highway pegs added for stretching out....there numerous other factors and add ons to compensate, including base layer clothing such as LDComfort. Training training training,  like any sport it requires training.  Start off small and work your way up to the bigger rides.

While on the subject of Iron Butt rides, Wombattle is on an epic ride atm, and hit a roo on the ST1300 in NW WA.  It seems the roo bounced off the mighty ST and Wom is battling on, currently at -21.4771, 116.01086 (paste it in Google maps). 
I won't say where he's been or when he started for fear of frightening someone.

Wombattle is a man that can achieved this, even a little dance with a roo wont stop him.

Anyway he needs to get home so he can go back to Uni.
