Motorader heated grip pads
« on: September 12, 2012, 10:29:04 AM »

I have just ordered one of these as my current heated grips seem to have lost a bit of heat, which was quite obvious going to the border run in -5c foggy conditions.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130707005518&ssPageName=ADME:L:OC:AU:3160

Also, I have had a pair of nice gel grips that I have been waiting a few years to put on

http://www.murphskits.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=35

They should be installed this week so I will report back.  The main reason I went with these is that you can choose your own grips, rather than what comes with kits like the Oxfords.

Haven't bothered fitting mine yet, since we're coming into Summer.
It should be possible to test their current draw without going to the trouble of fitting them.

I will test the current draw on mine when they get here for comparison purposes. How they heat will also depends on how they are built and the resistance of the heat pads.

I just got the motoroder kit. Looks very simlar to the 5.99 one, except there is also a rotary heat control in addition to the hi/lo as well as a module in the cabling that looks like a relay, but is probably part of the rotary heat control.

The instructions do stress that the supplied tape should go over the metal handlebar before sticking on the pads, otherwise there is a risk of a short. Sounds like that was Tipsy's problem?

Sorry, but I'm a bit confused here.   :crazy
I haven't installed my cheapies yet, but I obviously need guidance.
We're to strip the grips back to metal, bind that with the supplied tape, wrap the elements around it and shrink the tubing onto it.
Is that it?  Or do we then put our choice of grips over the top?
In my ignorance, I was just going to wrap the elements around the OEM grips and then shrink the tubing.  It's becoming apparent that might have melted the grips.

Good thing, because the Chinglish instructions on eBay are less than enlightening.

At least Tipsy has demonstrated one option to avoid, namely wrapping the conductive material around metal that's earthed and shooting 12 volts through it to test the fuse.

Who's next to report their progress?

Based on the instructions that came with mine:

At least on the metal, clean the metal and use either the tape that came with mine, or the included shrink wrap (see below - looks like the tape should be used to insulate and the shrink wrap to protect the heat pad). The idea is to electrically insulate the heated element from the metal
Stick the heated element on next.  That means peeling back the paper to reveal the adhesive.
Slip on whatever grips you want to use.  Use either a hairdryer to heat the grips or the old fashioned way of hairspray.
Wire up the grips to an igniton switched source, unless you are confident that you will not leave them on, or that someone else else might turn them on.

If you have both tape and shrink wrap I suppose you could use either for insulating the metal handlebar from the heating element, or perhaps the shrink wrap is for protecting the heating element from the grip being installed over the top?  I would have thought that you would want the heating element contacting the grip as much as possible, but protecting the heating pad makes sense too. Reading the ebay instructions suggests that they missed the step about insulating the metal from the pad with the tape, and the shrink wrap is meant to go over the top

I can scan in the instructions that came with mine, as they make sense. PM me to let me know if you want them.

Just had a look at these kit's on ebay. they all say the contents are,

2 x Heated grip pads (with connection wires and on/off switch)
2 x Heat resistant covers

If the heat resistant covers are the shrink wraps, as it seems,  if you put them over the pads ain't that going to trap the heat under them?
If they are heat shrunk on to the bars that would stop heat been lost into the bars.......just thinking.

Heat resistant = won't melt at a certain temp,  not Thermal insulated. Heat should go through grips. I'll need to ensure grip glue can take the heat too.

Cheers ruSTyEB, that makes sense.
I now wonder why the more expensive sets don't have the shrink wraps with them?
Must just be a quality thing maybe they don't expect an issue with overheating.

massive $5.69 for these grips at the moment (high-low version http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/261888276052 )... fitted them on the weekend and they work well.  Actually put the heating pads between the stock grips, and the grip puppies.

Only issue I have had with them is the wire is quite thin so it is difficult to crimp in a bullet connector... that and when I put the side fairing back on I pulled the connector apart  :cuss

Currently plugged into custom power/jump start harness (note to self, have to post the piccies/howto for that)

Wish I had these on a couple of weeks ago on the 2c mornings.

Now nice comfy riding to work  :slvr13

Oxford grips are simple to install and have sensing electronic to switch themself OFF when engine stops. Installed now 3 sets on my bikes. Could not ride without them in Canberra weather.

I bought a set recently off ebay for a few bucks, however I think it was just to put off the inevitable,  being a set of Oxford's.

I wired them into the #4 switch (police block) but I just have visions of my bike burning to a small pile on the ground.

Ah well, I tried.
