Firewood Splitter
« on: December 09, 2015, 01:45:55 PM »
For the last 40 years, our main heating in winter has been firewood, burnt in a slow combustion heater.   We would usually burn around one and a half tons of wood per year, and have only needed to buy firewood a couple of times.   We gather wood when we can, have access to a couple rural properties and have cut up fallen trees for friends.   For the last 40 years we have swung axes to cut up the gathered wood and there comes a time in life when that gets a bit more difficult.   For me that was about five years ago.    I tried buying Chris a nice new axe, and she was happy with that for a while, but she was still a bit slow and struggled to find the time to clean the gutters and mow the lawns.

We've recently invested in an electric/hydraulic log splitter with a 12 tonne ram, and what a wonderful piece of kit it is.   We should have bought one years ago.    The wheeled stand that it's sitting on is my own work, as the original machine was far too close to the ground to use without straining backs.    The big castor wheels at the back enable it to be easily moved around for use or storage.

Wish we'd had one of these growing up in Adelaide.  One of my chores as a kid was splitting the firewood

Well the axe won't be wasted, because she'll still need to split kindling.
And tell her to be careful, because losing fingers could slow down the cleaning and cooking!      :-(((

The Rocket Stove is a very interesting concept, but is not for me.   I did replace the firebricks in my combustion heater with steel plates to increase it's heat retaining characteristics, and insulated them by packing a 10mm gap behind the plates with ash.

He has it at the moment and tried it out at the weekend. Everyone was impressed. As we all were when I took a really hard old block for a trial before we bought it.

..... I now have log splitter envy.

Me too, and that's I saw yours. But then I saw this .......

We bought one of these last week

I have double log splitter envy.

PS.    Re. the tow hitch above, you'll need to change this to a swivel hitch if you are to tow it behind the ST when you bring it to my place.  Alternatively, I could pick-it-up from your place.

PPS.   LSE = Log Splitter Envy

          PPS = .........  No, I better not!

Fine looking piece of equipment.. both of them.  ++ Must take my camera to my mates place, as he recently built a splitter himself.
Will post image next week.

I had two dishwashers, but they grew up and left home.   :rofl

Nice log splitters. They both need to have a plate about 300mm square on each side so that when you split a piece and need to split again they don't drop to the ground and you have to bend to pick them up again. Also easier to catch to put into your trailer/wheelbarrow.

What a great suggestion.   You're an ideas man.

Thanks. Have used one with the plates and it makes it easier than trying to catch the bits and work the operating lever with only two hands. Have also seen them with a curved arm powered by a smaller hyd ram to lift big blocks from ground up to working height.

Make the side plates with a slight tilt inwards to the Centre.  Still allows for large diameters logs, but means you don't have to be on perfectly flat ground and also keeps the split bits  close to the splitter for repositioning.
Cheers,
Gary
