In the brief time I had my FJR, compared to my ST1100 (which I still have) I thought the FJR had a ton more torque and clearly this is a result of the extra power from the engine. I could easily accelerate from 60kph in top gear and felt NO engine lugging where I tend to change down on the ST. The seat wasn't quite as comfy as even my stock ST seat. The FJR had the stock panniers that seemed a tad smaller than the ST but it also had a nice Givi top-box that made up for it.
In terms of overall build quality, I thought the ST's switchgear and instrumentation was superior in feel and function, mind you, my favourite switchgear was that on my K1100LT that just felt solid. Once you get used to indicators on either side, they work remarkably well and make a lot of sense.
Overall, as much as I loved the FJR and I would buy another one, I don't feel any particular urge to part with my ST, unless it's to move to a 1300.
Importantly, the sideways shunt that destroyed the alternator cover on the FJR and immediately made it unrideable probably would not have done so with the ST. The car's bumper would probably have collected the engine bar on the ST and done no further damage. I certainly don't believe it would have caused the bike to be written off as was the FJR
