STranglers Northern Adventure to Atherton
« on: November 23, 2017, 01:00:25 PM »
 :blk13  :dred11
I am heading off on Sunday 26th November on a ride to Atherton to pick up a camper trailer from Me-3 Ben.
I have to do this trip up and back to be home again on the 3rd Dec as I am having a Bone marrow biopsy 9am, anal/bowel cancer screening test 1pm, followed by an MRI at 4pm all at Liverpool Hospital on the Monday 4th Dec.
I plan on riding from Picton, home, to Injune 1,188k's on Sunday followed by Injune to Atherton on Monday 1,274k's. That will change if my body says  :eek 'STOP'!  :eek
The next day will be fitting a towbar to STrangler, doing the wiring with Ben's help, then testing it out towing the camper trailer a little, before turning round and heading home via Cape Hillsborough then head straight back to home stopping when I need and sleeping in the trailer.. a trip of 5414k's all up. My Bubbler spot a year on STrangler will be on  https://spotwalla.com/tripViewer.php?id=170835a0b6a26b44c2&hoursPast=0&showAll=yes   and here's my route via google maps.

Best of luck with the trip, and also with the battery of tests when you return.  I hope STrangler performs well for you and that you both enjoy the experience.

Id love to see some pics of the camper trailer !  And also your experience with it on the way back.  Ruth was talking about getting one just the other night and I brushed it off by saying there is no such thing that is light enough to be towed by a bike.  I'm happy to be proven wrong.

Steve are you on the OzSTOC Facebook page? there are pics on Ben McGilvray's post of the trailer he is selling me also somewhere here on OzSTOC is a thread when he re furbished it. I towed a smaller trailer with STranger my ST1100, but he is getting retired at the end of December. Its why I'm getting the 1300 towbar fitted to STrangler.

Yeah, pics or it didn't happen.

I'm happy to be proven wrong.

That shouldn't be hard given how many people on here have one.

I've towed the Elite camper to and from SEQ, Mildura and around Tasmania, as well as many shorter trips in Victoria.  All up, around 20,000km.  Before that the Mighty CB1300 towed the Classic trailer on similar trips, all up around 40,000km.

Whether a trailer is right or wrong is up to the rider.  In my case the trailer is right for us.  Mrs W and I love the queen size bed, space for all of the necessary gear and supplies for three nights in the bush, both trailers towed effortlessly and safely.

The Elite camper:

Some specs:

The Classic trailer:

My 2 cents - forget the Gillies on the return trip towing a new trailer. Take the Palmerston Highway instead.
I was born in Atherton and went to primary school in Malanda.
I'd love to come with you but I have Alice minding duties.
Have a good trip and good luck with the tests.

Sage advice for someone towing a new trailer on a new bike.

Palmerston is still fun enough.

Heck all the 4 range roads are fun.

Sorry Diesel Gillies can wait til I go back after Mackay NatRally'
Lionel I picked Palmerston as its got me headed south and as I need to be back sooner rather than later. I'm not overly concerned about towing a new trailer, but will be cautious with it till I forget its there. I'll have to insure it ASAP just in case. I do want to enjoy it when I can get away without time constraints.

So here I am sitting in a motel in Tamworth, I was able to leave early so I did. It will make the days not so long. My nephew and his fiancé have left Sydney and will arrive here sometime around midnight. They too will have less of a drive back to Narangba tomorrow.

Johnny appears to arrived at Emerald around 21:35, having ridden a tad over 1100 Km for today.
O'night temp expected to drop to 18/21, with max tomorrow of 36 degrees.

A block to the east of position shown is the BP servo where I turned north for Townsville, 6 years ago, and my GPS stated :
"Take first exit at next roundabout, 605 KM!"
