High temps.... when to give up
« on: January 18, 2018, 04:35:21 PM »
Morning all,
With the country heading into lunacy temperatures over the next week, I was wondering at what point on the thermometer does the average bear riding a ST decide Ive had enough.

I am getting to the point now where I have to consider getting dressed up if it is likely to break 30 deg and I wont even consider oprning the garage if 35 is likely.

Thoughts?

cheers
Troy

45 is when I reckon it's too hot, however I have been known to ride in temperatures higher than this.
That being said I do try not to ride in temperature above 45.

I guess its an individual thing, if you are dehydrating or fatiguing the stop.

We all have our own limits that you have to learn

I think that around 40C is a good enough excuse to stop under a shady tree.

Generally, as a rule, if its a " Hey lets go for a ride " event, over 30 gets a no. The exception is if its a planned ride I`m in. Not all comfy, but cant let the team down. :wht11

I  struggle in mid to low 30's as I suffer with eczema. Sweat is a massive, and immediate, trigger. Some SE Qld riders may have noticed me tearing my skin off at summer RTE's.  :fp  Sorry guys. Not sure why I live in Queensland to be honest.  :think1   Tassie?  Vic?  No bugger it. I just won't ride when its too hot for me.  ;-*

Here's a really good article about riding in heat.     http://www.ironbutt.com/ibmagazine/ironbutt_1002_62-66_Hot.pdf
A cooling vest can make a huge difference to maintaining some comfort and safety in hot weather.

Having said that, I find that I need to take active steps to keep cool when riding in temps over about 35.   Below that temp, drinking plenty of water, and allowing for cooling by evaporation of perspiration through a mesh vest seems to be enough.

Low 40's are ok so long as I keep hydrated and the humidity is low enough.  Plenty of 35c+ trips on my way home from work, comfortable enough as long as you keep moving.

Was asked at  work today whether I'd rode on 44 degree day- replied "to smart for that".

Seriously, I now have the choice for general travel. Have done lots of riding at wet, cold & hot extremes (SA standards).

Basically still ride for the slide, which means I have a good collection of gear, and no matter how tempted I am to dress down, can't trust other drivers.

I see "Cool Vests" advertised for $175.
One LD legend buys ice and fills every pocket.  Apparently that's good for an hour at 40+o.
Everyone agrees hydration is essential.  Allowing a full airflow in low humidity high temps will drag huge amounts of water off your skin.  Fine if you're drinking huge amounts.  I recall Wendy mentioning 18 litres in one day!  The logical thing then is to zip up and wear a bit of heat but save a lot of sweat.
Be aware of your tyre wear at 40+ road temps and 100+ speeds.  It will be substantial.
I suffer above 35 degrees.  The heat off the engine on the legs compounds the misery.
Like most here, I won't do it for fun!
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

Our Quarantine station staff at Yamba (SA) have had to take motorcyclists into the station and stand them under a cold shower they've been so heat stressed. I've ridden back to Adelaide from Bordertown after a work operation in 40 in the shade and wearing full leathers - never again - the poor people of Tintinara had to witness the very unpleasant sight of your truly stripping down to boxers to pour water over myself - in the main street. I now have a cool vest which wicks water away - it's ok with a mesh DriRider, not as good as I thought it would be. I ride for pleasure and anything over about 32 I don't find pleasurable anymore and having just bought a new Isuzu MU-X with airconditioning (the old jeeps A/C crapped itself about 5 years ago) I'm rediscovering the pleasure of driving in hot weather. Scarlett hasn't seen the light of day for a month.

As it's my only wheels I do the daily commute in any weather but on a day ride I  draw the line at 40.

Riding in the heat doesn't bother me as much as when I need to stop on a hot day. While riding the temp feels a little cooler. Either way keeping fluids up is important.

I'm a QLDer but I must be one of the weaklings.  With a mesh jacket I'm happy up to about 34-ish (which I note is what that IBA paper says is the pain point :KissBlow)  Last weekend's ride was in the high 30s and was a bit of a stretch.

Days of 30+ are normal in the West this time of year, a lot depends on what you are used to.

If I didn't ride when it was over 30, I'd never bloody ride!

I'm with Shiney, my limit is usually around the 45, but have ridden in hotter, but then I also play hockey, in full goal keeping gear in 35 plus temps.  I find a camelbak filled with electrolyte solution and LOTS of ice works well for both riding and playing hockey.

Anything below 20 and I'm starting to think it's too bloody cold to ride.....

45. Is that C?

I havent had cause much above 30-35. I dont think I would like it though. Except for the day I pick Ruby up from the north of the city. That was the worst ride ever. 35-40C in all the gear on a new to me bike after not riding for 30 + years in peak hour traffic. And trying to keep to the speed limit and finding out via the forum that the speedo isnt correct. Boy was I glad too get home.

A few years back I rode the ST in 40 degree heat and covered around 1200 km on that day.
I made the mistake of removing my gloves because of the heat, and suffered major sunburn to my hands on that day. Won't make that mistake again. (removing the gloves, that is)

I have a white mesh jacket that I wear aroind town in the build up. On longer trips, even in the heat, I wear my OzSTOC jacket with vents open. I find I dehydrate too quickly in the mesh at highway speeds.

With you Marcus, maybe a ride to the nearest Pub might be in order.

Having said that, I have ridden in temps in the mid 40’s in leather pants and full jacket when riding around SA, NT, WA, even out West NSW can get plurry hot! . .

Riding thru the Northern parts of our great country, if we stopped for more than fuel, it was off with the leathers and down to Tee shirts and light weight shorts which we wore under our leathers . . But still had our riding boots on . .

Ride for the slide as they say . .
