Scam??
« on: February 26, 2018, 09:38:15 PM »

I've put my first ever ad onto Gumtree (long time buyer, first time seller) to sell my caravan (see separate post)

Very quick response from this guy. I gave him a few more details and got this in return. Anybody else's spidy senses tingling after reading this?

"Thanks a lot for the email. I'm away at sea at the moment, and we are presently offshore in New Zealand on project. We do not have access to phone at the moment, it's 15days off and 15days on,which is why I contacted you with internet messaging facility. Where is it located at the moment?

What's the present condition?Final Asking price?how many owners has it had?does it need anything to be replace or repair??has it ever been in a crash?Has it been kept in a garage? When last do you service it? I won't be able to come for the inspection due to the nature of my work and i would have called but our calling is restricted and i want it delivered before my arrival..Regarding the payment,  I can pay you through direct bank deposit (EFT),using PayPal instant bank wire transfer service.I will need your Account name,BSB and Account number. If you are not comfortable with that, you can set up a PayPal account properly at www.PayPal.com.au and I will make the payment through PayPal,this way, all I will need is your PayPal email address.. I have also contacted my courier who will come for pick up after the whole fund has been cleared into your acct and deliver it in Northern Territory for me

With the issue of my details, transferring the name of ownership and signing of all paperwork will be done by the pick up agent. If you are not comfortable with that, you can cancel the registration and i will buy Unregistered.

Regards"

1 thing the 'away buyer" failed to do was to offer you much more than your price. I got a similar reply when I tried selling STranger on gumtree they offered $1500 more than my asking price and wanted me to deliver it from Sydney to Darwin..

Looks like classic scam to me.  It would be interesting to play with the ‘buyer’ and see where it goes.

Yep, that's a classic scammers approach, and if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.   Tell him you've changed your mind about selling the van, but he can have the chooks for nothing, and you'll put them in the post.

I used to scam-bait scammers on 419eater.com.  I got one Nigerian scammer based in Benin to ride his motorbike from Cotonou to Lagos to meet me - I was pretending to be an attractive blonde from USA travelling from South Africa back to LA.  I'd supplied him some suggestive photos from a Nevada chicken ranch website.  He arrived in Lagos penniless as he'd had to bribe border guards to get back in to Nigeria from Benin.  Unfortunately I had been mugged in Johannesburg and taken to the hospital with a broken arm and concussion so hadn't been able to catch the plane to Nigeria to meet him.  I eventually told him I was a man who had had a sex change operation and was working in a brothel in Nevada, he was quite upset and still penniless in Lagos.

Now I've been a motorcyclist I kinda feel sorry for him, NOT!

Recently the scammers have been offering to protect me from the scammers.  I got a phonecall telling me there have been "suspicious packets from Nigeria" in my Brisbane area's internet and I needed to give the caller all my details so they could protect my computer...
They were obviously genuine because they knew I live in Brisbane.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

Nope Bodo, he means the castellation on the top of that chess piece, the rook or castle, so it must be a chess nut!  LOL

Not sure but I also think the thing to watch out for also are any links they want you to click. E.g. with the example above the link ends .com.au whereas the correct site ends with .com/au  Goodness knows where the .com.au will take you.
Cheers ... Mark

Had another scammer try it on as well yesterday.

Unfortunately for them, I've sold it to someone who was trusting enough to transfer into my account without physically seeing the van.

Lucky I'm honest and seemingly trustworthy  :grin
