2003 HONDA ST1300 - PRICE ADVICE

Can someone or everyone give me some idea of the price you'd be looking at paying for a decent condition 2003 ST1300 with around 123,000 kms on it. No farkles at all.

I'm about to advertise Ruby2sday with 151,000km if a couple who looked at it today don't go ahead.  It is farkled with cruise control, heated grips, pannier liners, sheepskin and LED headlights.  I'll be asking $5500 with a lower limit of $5000 based on what I can see on Bikesales.   Ruby also has a full year's registration which can be claimed back by an interstate buyer. Mine is a 2007 but as I accidentally found out, seems to be wired like a 2008 because that question arose when I tried to fit a GIpro gear indicator to Rubina, a 2004 plate first registered in 2005.
From that perspective, if yours is in very good nick (Ruby has only 2 minor scratches and has a good maintenance record, including a recent shock absorber overhaul), considering it probably doesn't have ABS, I would hope to get it well under $5000 although I've seen them asking more, but generally for later models.  Cosmetic condition becomes important when they get older.  I'm thinking of the faded appearance and damaged seat covers on some ST1100s I've seen on Bikesales.  Having been garaged and cared for becomes very important.

How long is a piece of string?

As Bill says, condition, service history  - if these are good, it will be worth more than less.  But what it's worth to you and some others (who aren't interested in buying it) is not all that relevant.  What it's worth to potential buyers is what's relevant.

Post some pics, details of service, number of previous owners, any / all information you have will help.

Nigel picked-up a 200,000km ST1300 for $500 about 12 months ago, it was was in very good nick for it's age - I would say decent condition.

A think to remember is that Farkles dont necessarily add value to a bike, in the end its a second hand bike.

While I agree most farkles are not going to add value, I'd certainly be prepared to pay above average for one fitted with a cruise control.  But then, not everyone does long rides often enough to justify having one.

Of course, I was referring to those who dont know the value of some farkles, and that some riders dont neccesarily want bells and whistles..

Of course, there are some bikes where the modifications have been poorly executed ( bad messy wiring) so it takes time and expense to rectify the problems.

Good point regarding wiring, Brock.  Rubina's setup is the most conscientious wiring I've ever bestowed on a bike, and I've done a few.  I used an Eastern Beaver fuse block which really helps set the tone.
The only place I had to commit carnage was installing the Gear Indicator.  For ST1300s 2008 onwards it's a simple plug into the diagnostic plug.  The earlier ST1300s require a bridge into the speedo cable at a plug junction, and a tap into the tacho line.  Healtech, the manufacturer, supplies on of those iniquitous clamp-on wire taps which are verboten in OZSTOC so I had to liberate the appropriate wire from the cable (buried in the middle, as Murphy insists) and solder in a tap.



I bound it all up in black tape and it almost looks respectable.
The two heavy red wires supply the block, of from a 30 amp relay for switched power (triggered by the tail light circuit) and one to a hot bus, unused at present.

This was a particularly timely post, I was about to ask Shiney the same question!  I've decided that I have to sell Big Red as there's been no improvement in the vertigo so I'm unlikely to be riding again soon, if ever.  I was interested in the farkles discussion as Red as LED lights (front & rear), Bikequip screen and Breakaway throttle lock plus a couple of others.

Anyway I have to get some up to date photos and post it.  You never know I might not have to put on Bikesales or Gumtree, especially as I don't have to get it down from Bundaberg.

Most things (and motorcycles aren't any different) are really only worth what someone is prepared to sell an item for, or what someone else is prepared to pay, how long the seller is prepared to hold on to get (or close) their asking price, how long a buyer has been looking and just missed out on something similar, and (of course) condition, km, age, service history, farkles, location - what have i missed out on?

Do some research, check sales sites and forums, see what people are asking, try to find out what bikes sold for, and keep your fingers crossed.

When selling, start with a high figure, it's easy to come down.  If you start low, it's not likely a buyer will offer you more.  Only the seller knows how desperate or otherwise they are to sell a motorcycle, if they need the cash, space in their garage or whatever their motive is to sell.

Agreed. It looks the same colour as Biggles’ Rubina which I think is 2004 or 2005.
