Out of commission.
« on: October 06, 2024, 11:13:18 AM »
Good afternoon all, after returning from the SA/WA border ride I have been having excruciating lower back pain, was on pain medication for couple of weeks with no improvement so an MRI was done concluding I had severe spinal stenosis. Saw a neurosurgeon on Thursday who had recommended spinal surgery as soon as possible as my condition has worsened with severe weakness of the left leg with a condition called foot drop, also can’t walk for long. Will  be seeing a physiotherapist on Monday and exploring all other options as I would like to avoid surgery as far as possible.
This has come as a shock to me as I have lived a healthy life up until now.
Hope to be back on the bike sometime soon.
Till then ride safe & stay well.
Cheers,
Jd

Hi JD. Rotten news and I hope your incapacity is very short lived. All the best for treatment and resolution, may it be speedy and permanent.
I reckon we've all just about had enough of 2024 and 2025 can't come fast enough.

Sorry to hear of this Jonathan.

Hope it sorts out.

I had really bad back pain after arriving home from Mansfield, scans showed a few issues that have, luckily, so far not required further intervention.

Hi Jonathon, sorry about the news re. the bad back.  I have complete empathy, sympathy and understanding as I have suffered from lower back pain for many years - sometimes okay, other times requiring some pretty heavy pain drugs - they're wonderful at the time, but can lead to some pretty awful unintended side effects and other long-term issues.

It was pretty much under control until March 2023 (I had my "off" on the Great Alpine Road), when the impact on the road upset the "under control" situation.  It wasn't until earlier this year when I went under the knife and now only suffer some pretty mild, bearable pain (no drugs needed) as long as I limit other activities - no running or heavy lifting, no gardening or lawn mowing (that's what I told Helen), only short walks, etc..

Fortunately, I can ride the push bike and motorbikes.  The push bike riding is actually therapeutic - it seems that leaning forward takes weight / pressure off the back and opens up the gap between the discs.  The specialist has said that it's not surprising and encourages my pushbike riding.

Cheers, chin-up, there's light at the end of the tunnel, just find the tunnel.
Cheers,  Williamson (AKA Michael)

That is horrible news brother, have you spoken to a Chiropractor?
They specialise in this area and have a vastly greater amount of knowledge that may give you an option outside of surgery.

Anyway I hope you are able to get some good options and find a good result.

All the best mate

Yes JD, plenty of options.

There's also TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) which I previously had some success with other ailments, not sure why I didn't try last year / earlier this year.  My Dad, Jim Lamers RIP, pioneered TENS in Australia, internationally as well according to the article my sister posted on the company (ActivLife Technologies) website.

https://robyn-murphy-1v3n.squarespace.com/

https://www.activlifetech.com.au/

The company has now been wound-down, but a Google search will find many other TENS options out there.
