I am planning on around 900, give or take 50, depends on where the stops are.

Obviously it's a very individual thing.  Most "normal" riders I know think 500 a day is pretty right.  It also can be affected by just how far you need to go.  I'll do 1000 if it means one less night in a motel or cabin.  If you're comfortable on the bike, the weather is good and you're feeling fine, then keep riding.
The key factor is, don't lock yourself into a tight schedule that will ruin your day if you can't meet it because of factors outside your control like mechanical failures.  When I did my SS1600 to catch the ferry to Tassie last October, I left myself a spare day because it was important that I catch the ferry.  As it turned out, I met my schedule and rang the ferry company trying for a spot on the crossing the day before my booking, but all the tie-downs were booked.  So I had a day to look around the city, which wasn't wasted.   :thumbsup
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

Yorkie and the others are on the money if you have a fair distance to cover and are physically up to it.

If you'd like to see a few things along the way, then knock it down to 4-600/day.

If time is NOT an issue - then pick the next interesting town, and do the tour of it - even if it is 120-250kms away.

Safety 1st, enjoyment 2nd, distance covering 3rd.  It is written.

Hope this helps.

Cheers, Diesel

I am working on the theory that across the Nullabor, if I do 5-600k I will be sitting on my arse for around 3-4 hrs of daylight with stuff all to do at a servo come motel, may as well be on the road.

Our biggest Day to Middelton will be a 550 k's (Hay plains)....our shortest day will be a 230k (GOR)....we will be two up and basing our ride around the things to see and do as apposed to covering the miles to get to Middelton. It will be an experience, 3 days and 1,500k's is the most time we have had together on the bike.....this trip will be 5,500k's in 14 days.

Cheers

What you're really asking then, is "Is it OK to do just under 1000 kays in a day?"
The answer is yes, but you'd better go for a few long rides soon to find your own comfort range.  Before I did my first 1000 day I did a lap of 750 kays just to see what it felt like and how much I still had left in me when I got home.

All of the above really.  Main thing is don't push the distances out so you have to do days that make you not enjoy it or become unsafe.  Don't become a slave to what others say they do - just do what works for you.

Agree with John on this.

Ride your own ride, include some of the sights along the way as they make good rest stops. I'm happy doing 600-800 kms a day

On a 'round Australia trip we averaged around 500km per day.  Our shortest day was about 200 and the longest was 750km.   Just make sure that you ride to your own abilities and comfort, and don't ride if you're sleepy.   On a long trip, you get into a groove after a few days and the long distances come easier.

It all depends on where and why you are going at who is with you. Most of our riding is two up touring so our maximum day is usually no more than 600kms with stops every 1 > 2 hours.  (and we consider that a big day). We will average around 600 km/day to and from from Middleton but on our our Highway 1 circuit of Aus starting in April we plan to average a very leisurely 200km/ day over the 12 weeks taking lots of days off and side tours along the way.

Morning to the Boys & Girls in Ozstoc Land,

It has been said - "up to the individual" which is very smart & true - be yourself - not what some body else wants.

For me - a good ride in a day and return recently - Brisbane to Sydney - 986 kms (each way) along Highway 1 between Christmas & New Year. (No I am not a Far Rider) Very enjoyable it was too.
Traffic wasn't all that bad but then I know a lot of the less travelled alternatives - some have been mentioned above.
Excluding Fuel & refreshment stops - roughly 10 1/2 hours in the saddle - overall about 13 3/4 hrs on the road.
Because it is an ST (standard)- almost as fresh as a daisy - hot bum being the worst.
For the whole journey, my ST1100 returned me 20.48 km / litre OR 4.9 l / 100 km OR for my age group 58.2 MPG cruising at the posted speed limit - usually plus 5-8 - with an occasional burst to ease stress on right wrist.

All in all - I enjoyed it and that is all I have to please - (Can I go again  soon ?)

Bob
