ST1100 Kaoko throttle lock
« on: June 24, 2013, 09:02:59 PM »
I've been looking for a throttle lock for my ST1100 but wanted heated grips fitting and couldn't afford an MC Cruise, then I saw Malcolm's Kaoko throttle lock with oxford heated grips, problem solved I thought, until I went onto the net to find who sold them. No-one because Kaoko don't make them for the ST1100, I got in touch with Kaoko in South Africa and they agreed to look into producing a version for the 1100 if I could provide them some measurements, they need an accurate ID and OD measurement of the handlebars, a technical drawing of the bar weight, is there anyone out there who may know these measurements or where i can get this information?
Also are there any members out there that would be interested in purchasing one, once produced?

I used a Kaoko throttle lock from my Wee-Strom for a while, it worked fine. The bar end is a bit shorter, but it worked well. I also have a "ThrottleMeister" type of lock, which I prefer. Just seems easier to use.

As far as I know the bars are bog standard 17mm. This is the only size I have required when fitting replacement grips over either the standard handlebar or the wrap around heating elements I placed over em in the past 16 years.

Hope this helps..

Ciao, the can :-)

I bought a Kaoko for my 1300, but I suspect I need to trash the Oxford heated grips to fit the Kaoko.  On the ST1300 there is an internal part inside the bars that needs to be removed to fit the Kaoka, and it appears some what difficult to get out.    Hence my Kaoka is in a draw in the shed, and not on the bike.

Haha......Pinky, Diesel and Tony where are you pair, remember this scenario of Pete's ???

Pete this all got played out in Diesels shed about 11pm and most of the way through Diesel liquor cabinet, we found 2 very small flat screw drivers a small pair of needle nose pliers and a sh!t load of  :cuss  :cuss got the offending bit out. It has an internal key way that is not obvious until you pull the beeeeach out.

I kept the bits so will check them out in the morning with the benefit of sobriety and get back to you with the how to.

Cheers

In the workshop manual, it shows how to remove the part inside the bars. You'll need a couple of small screwdrivers.

The place where I got my throttle lock from was Motorrad Garage in Briggs St Welshpool. Why wouldn't the 1300 fit on the 1100?
Don't they have the same diameter bars?

Is it possible to remove the bit inside the bars without removing the Oxford grips?

Can I try your throttle lock on my bike, Malcolm, to see if it fits?

I've been inspired and had another crack at fitting the Kaoko to my ST1300 this morning.   I've got the inner weight out of the bar with some careful probing with very small screwdrivers, and fitted the Kaoko without needing to remove the grips.   The thrust washer referred to in the fitting instructions was not in with the kit, and I have a 5mm gap between the Kaoko tension ring and the rubber hand grips.   I'll get some plastic and turn one up on the lathe.

I can now retire my 20c cable tie throttle lock, which has served me very well for tens of thousands of kilometres.
