Quite a few pearls there.
Regarding the 2,000,000 smokers who die or quit, they are replaced by a very large number (probably less or nearly the same) who take up the addiction.

Regarding bananas, I suspect (without researching it) that by "propagate" they mean sow its seeds away from the parent, as many do by fruit-carrying birds.  In fact, sucklings grow around the roots of mature trees ensuring their survival.  Hence they are essentially a perennial.

You're right.  Only iron rusts.  The original really should have said "corrode".  That's what is so great about gold- it resists interacting with oxygen, and so doesn't convert to an oxide in its presence the way most other metals do.  Lead, for one, does oxidise but very slowly.  It forms a very thin dull coating of lead oxide which will resist breaking down under weather on a roof for centuries.  A light scratch with a sharp object reveals bright pure lead.

Thanks Biggles, it's a good day when you learn something new... :thumb

So if gold tarnishes, would it be due to its impurity?

That's the fact.  It's the copper that causes the discoloration.
