RG 500 and RD500 test
« on: January 09, 2012, 02:58:49 PM »
I know e have a broad range of bike interest here.  I test rode an RG500 when it first came ou - seemed like a mental bike at the time.  I am still here with a licenece, so obviously did not buy one.  I rode along with a mate on the FZ750 (5 valve 750 Yamha).  He was on the RG fist and wondered why I dropped behind so quickly (I was full on the throttle!)  We changed over...I used the same amount of throttle on the RG, and after getting used to bike lofting the front wheel through the gears got to quite like it.  Handled well too.  Definitely a toy for pure fun.

Aaahh. The old RG. This brings back memories of my first road bike, Saaz.

I bought a RG250gamma brand new in 1985 after using an XT125 4 stroke to commute in Wagga Wagga. It was my first and only foray into the world of 2 stroke road bikes and boy was it a blast. I only fell off it twice - both at sub 60 km/hr which is why I am still around to talk about it.

The longest ride I took it one was during my holidays when I decided to load up and go camping at Eden via Batemans Bay. I had a ball along the coast roads leaning into the switchbacks.

Unfortunately I hit the rear side of a Tarago back in Wagga through a roundabout and the RG was no more - I was lucky to escape with only a bruised shoulder. But I had 18 mths of excitement on the RG.

My nest bike was a CBX750F but that is another story.

I could'nt find a picture of my old bike but found the attached on the net which is identical except for the tobacco company decal on the fairing.
