Won't start

Hi All my 2002 st1100 won't start, I have not had it long and thought it was sitting around too long with previous owner and the battery was stuffed. Put in a new battery today but the same. Ignition off and clock is on, ignition on and absolutely nothing, no clock or lights. Zip. checked old and new battery both 12:8volts. checked and cleaned fuses and connections. at a loss. Pleas any ideas.

Chris, it was on side stand in neutral just tried to start it in neutral both stands up, nothing.  when it is switched off the clock is on but I can't adjust the time and with the ignition on clock is off (blank)

Biggles, Cut off switch is off, tried in all positions (Ex Police bike) still nothing. If it was a faulty cut off switch in the stand, surely I would still have lights and ignition lights.

Jaybee, mine had similar issues sometimes. Check clutch switch. Even in neutral and side stand up or down mine still plays up. A couple flicks of clutch and seems to straighten out.

If the clock dies and loses the time once he ignition is turned on i'd say there is apoor battery connection.
Check positive on the battery is clean and tight, also the negative terminal.
More likely where the negative LEAD goes to the frame is not good.

Marcus, we don't have that ACC luxury on the 1100 though you bring up a sometimes missed item with problems like this.

It isn't unknown for an ignition switch itself to cause a little grief or one of the wires to and from it. Also a loose wire/contact in the kill switch. Bank angle sensor could also be faulty.

Most likely the wire connection on top of the starter switch has fried itself (left of the battery, in front of the fusible link).  It heats up, then loses connectivity. It may look a bit melted. That connection takes all the power up to the ignition swith, then back down to the fuse boxes.

 You can clean it up and tighten the connection, but if it is really melted then you may need a new one.  Another fix is to bypass the connection for the red wire to something more substantial - the red wire is the main power and the one most likely to overheat..

I did have the ignition switch fail on mine (sometime later after the above!) as it physically broke, but that connector is the number one suspect.

The clock has two power wires going to it - one to keep it going when the bike is off, the other to power the backlight and enable changing the clock.  The clock dieing when turned on is a classic example of the starter relay connectro dying.

Clock going out is odd, but may be a distraction, from the start problem.

Have a look at the sidestand switch plug, on the lower left side, look for the bullet connector in the green wire. If that is open, then you wont get a start.

Pezzz, Not sure what you mean about shorting the clutch switch, the bike always started with the clutch out, unlike my triumph with clutch in.

When you pull clutch in you hear a click. There is switch so you can start in gear with clutch in. Mine tends to be dicky sometimes and I find flicking the lever tends to help her start at these times. Find the 2 wires that go to that switch and join then or put a wire between them to short the circuit there. When mine is playing up I notice the neutral light dims when i hit the start switch and nothing else happens. Flick clutch lever and swear a bit and she starts. Just my observation.

Hey Jaybee, from the start of your story it sounds like you had no display with the ignition on apart from a dodgy clock display. If that's right then start at the battery and check your power out from that point.
See if you have power past the main fuse then at the ignition and so on.
