My first teething problem
« on: November 28, 2013, 12:59:55 AM »
So day 3 of new STeed (2006 ST1300PA) and i decided to add some LED's in the mirror MOD. I had some "supper brite's' from an old LED tail light off a work UTE. Job went well. i found that 3 LEDS was the limit for this type of LED with out adding capacitors and resistors etc.

While do this project i managed to flatten the battery so i did my second MOD. I fitted a "CHARGE PORT" to the bike. Basically its a plug, wired to the battery that i can easily connect my battery charger to with out having to remove half the bike to get to the battery terminals. I used a "DEANS" Connector if anyone's interested as i'm also into remote controlled cars.

Over all a good days MODDING the bike, so i decide to go for a quick ride, just for the hell of it. Change clothes, start bike and move out of shed, stop bike, close shed and let dog off chain, put on riding gear, start bike-realize i forgot my sunnies, stop bike and get sunnies, go to start bike and NOTHING........... What the ????? Check all switches and try again.. NOTHING push button 20 - 30 times.. not a sound ..... dash lights on, fuel pump working, check stop button, turn key on / off few time ..... silence. YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME ! it was working fine not more than 5 min ago!!

OK helmet off tools out, check ALL fuses- all good HMMMMMMMM .. OK starting to not see the funny side of this now.
OK put bike back in shed and start ripping things off it .... start with "start button" ( i thought it would be the easiest as i STILL don't know where the starter motor is - must look into that soon)

What a mission just to get to the button, had to pull the handle bar completely off just to get the switch cluster off ( don't think the bars have been off since new). you wouldn't believe it, corrosion over the button contact !!!!!!!!!!......  Problem found- sorted and fixed.
put it all back together and still found time for an hours ride.

ALL HAPPY AGAIN  :)

They say money cant buy happiness, but i say it can get you a damn good bike!

Interesting as I know that ST1100 have some potential corroson problems in the switches.  I suppose as ST1300 age similar issues might arise. Could be time to add a spray of contact cleaner and some inox/lubricant to an annual service.

If that was me it would have been the kill switch!  Don't know how many times I've brushed the kill switch and taken several minutes to realise that was why my bike was dead.  I find that the ST1100 has a very exposed kill switch.
