Anyone got any contacts with a bike trailer in the Upper Hunter area of NSW......got a member broken down (JohnnyYTD) near Murrurundi......looks like alternator gone and stuck on the roadside.....

Any ideas ??

Not trailer, (I can get one but its a bit far to go)

It may be his main fuse near the starter relay, or the regulator

He tells me that he heard a mechanical knock from the engine area that lasted a few hundred metres......then the lights went dull over a few k's.......pulled over and unable to start........Hazards went for another 30 mins then full darkness....

OK, that sounds expensive....

Could be a bearing failure in the alternator, hope he can get a replacement.

Brock I checked my25amp fuse there all good.
My nephew is trying to geta trailer org from Penrith. Looks like im under the stars tonight

John is sorted......had his nephew arrive at 0600 this morning with trailer from Sydney, on his way home now......he will report in on the issue when found.

Guys,
I replaced my 25amp alternator with a 40amp alternator last year. I had burned the voltage regulator/rectifier after i'd added some farkles. The mechanic had told me that the alternator was not 100% as a consequence. (although the mechanic knew less about the bike than I did, and that was a worry) You're welcome to it.

I have the gears that fit into the engine also.

Gday guys, so far the story is ,, When we got STranger home and in the ST ward,I connected jumper leads and he STarted, and idled without any noises, but died after taking jump off. today I have pulled the plastics off, got the battery on a charger.

IS THIS THE CULPRIT

then I did a few plastic weld repairs I found and removed another the 3rd burnt out ignition

after I can get the electrickery checked with meters by a mate I'll know a little more. I'll remove the fuel tank after and see just what I'm lQQking at. if theres a good view..
Ruben its my intention to see if I can get my 40 amp rebuilt if thats the problem.I'll take it off you if I need to ,, thank you.
Ive been reading up the manual on how to and I hope I dont have to pull out the swing arm and everything else apart to fix STranger

Thanks for the piccie and yes that is a 40 amper and a very, very, very tight fit. It is a hassle to retrofit a 25amper as the regulator rectifier for 25amp is external and has a different wiring harness that is almost impossible to source, On a positive note, YES, you will need to remove the swing arm to access the alternator. I have the special tools if you need to borrow. The positive is that you get to check out all your bearings and re-grease everything including your shaft drive.

Another positive is that you will save time by only removing the alternator and if you're careful and don't dislodge the gears, then you don't have to remove the sump later to refit said gears. I had to do that because the gears for the 25 amper are open to lubricate the alternator whilst the gears for the 40 amper are different as they are sealed to prevent fluid loss..

I know I can tackle this with a bit, & a bit more help from with the forum and those that know, and the right tool for the job , yes please I'll borrow
first things first,, lecky meter thingy, and check wires when i find em.. its not as if "I got something else to do",
if I gotta do more I'm happy to give STranger a good going over, new bearings & bits and lube

learning more about his innerds... making him STronger and mayB get a new lQQk..

Johnny are you going to the Doctor's Friday??, if not I'm on days off so we could start on STranger.

Rubencan rides near my place going to work (Davies Rd), just need to work out pick-up/delivery of the special tools.

If you get out and about get a couple aerosol degreaser $2 a can stuff.

Dave Friday is good for me, so if you can arrange with Ruben,

I have a couple of degreaser cans but will get a few more.
is there anything else I NEED that I should get ASAP,
today I am focusing on my car as its starter/ soliniod is playing up. and I need some transport,,

I just emailed through to the dodge36 email address. Lots of explanation and pictures. Note that use of a lewis pin is not mandatory, it is mentioned in there. The Honda alternator is a bit unique but can be rebuilt. If it comes to that I have contacts.

Thanx Dave and John, today I at least got my car going again as its starter motor carked it on the 25th May..
I will start removing more of STranger in prep for Friday Dave.
the battery is holding charge and I ran the bike for a few mins and could hear a rattle in the area nr alternator start as it warmed up. MayB the bearing that was mentioned by someone has failed..
John I am hoping to rebuild the alternator or get a good auto lecky bloke to restore it.. and thanx for the emails to Dave.

I sent through something about bearing replacement. There is also a wire that might break, but it sounds more mechanical. A sparky prepared to think about using whatever bits might fit is what you want. I have a contact in Canada who can do these rebuilds or supply parts, and is willing to give advice. Lets hope it is the cheap and easy fix!

John,
The 'Lewis Pin' is only required if you remove the alternator and also the alternator gears. If you are careful and manage to leave the gears in place then you save yourself from having to create a lewis pin, frustration and many hours of swearing (as was the issue in my case).
