Anyone interested in a Overnight DTE
« on: June 17, 2015, 01:17:03 PM »
Just throwing this up as food for thought.....and receive some feedback.

Motorcycling tends to draw people with other outdoor hobbies and interests together......it may be camping, fishing, caravanning, 4WDing, hiking etc.

So I was thinking of a throwing together a weekend away in a location depending on what part of the country we have the most interest.....my though is a camping destination in a semi-remote location, but not a great distance from a sealed road.

Many of us have 4x4 vehicles.... Non 4x4 owners could travel to a central secure location and leave their bikes or conventional cars and then travel the remainder of the distance with 4x4 owners with spare seats (less than 50k's) to a secluded location for an overnight stay.

It won't be a hardcore route into the location so a conventional un-modified 4x4 with Low Range would travel to the location with ease. But it would be enough to give an exciting experience to those who may have never had this sort of an opportunity in the past.....

Let's see if the interest is there to put this together  :think1

Post below your thoughts;

Interest, Location and if you have a vehicle available ??

Sounds ok. Have cruiser will travel. Depends for most people where it will be. Maybe a couple of different locations over time.. Are you thinking central NSW?

I guess you have a location already in mind Chris but I'll throw in one or two or three even maybe worth consideration.

Warrabah, north side of the Namoi river out from Manilla turn north off from the Namoi River Rd..............wowboys across the road might be an issue with a larger van. Small camp site along the Warrabah Creek.

Coolah Tops NP. From memory the location is called Top Hut? Best approached from the town side .

Georges Junction in the deeps of the Styx River gorge. Google crap map no-longer shows much detail in that area but its a formed, though very steep descent navigable by 2wd.

Last but not least one or other of the two camp sites on "The Barraba Track' which crosses the Nandewares and Mt Lindesay and kaputar. The first camp location on the Barraba end is only a few K's inside the park fence and was accessible by 2wd with care. Site could cater for 12/14 persons with minimal amenities. Track not suitable for caravans is on the sign out front due to a few steep pinches. Its a locked access, key available from Barraba end. Wet weather closes the show though.

Travel by car >:() ....maybe knobbies for the ST?

I hadn't really considered a location until we get some feedback on people's interest and locations....if we get more interest out of Members in the southern part of the country we may look at the Southern Highlands regions.....if it's really broad from Vic through to QLD then perhaps Wollemi NP area  :think1

Gatey we have spent time in the top 3 on your list, but spent loads of time on the Styx and Macleay rivers camping/fishing....Used to fly fish for trout in the morning and early arvo on the Styx and 20 mins later be down on the Macleay at Georges Junction chasing Aust Bass......:OldMan

Pockey even mentioned a trip over to Fraser Island, meet at Rainbow Beach with the bikes and conventional cars and take the 4x4's across for a couple of nights, some could camp others stay at Eurong village in cabins but all remain as a group.

Could be a fantastic and cheap way for those without the vehicles or skills to see the biggest sand island in the world up close and personal. :hatwave

I like the idea of a 4WD DTE.  However, northern NSW or Vic high country are both a long way from home for me.  Don't rule out the Flinders Ranges as a possible destination.

Wilpena Pound is on our to-do list.....so was the old Sky walk track before it closed  :-[

Most good for most amount of people will be the problem with the flinders ranges for this project if we can get the interest to put the time into it.....but you could take us through there some time  ;-*

++  Wilpena Pound is "Tourist Central" and not my favorite place.   However, I know some great camping spots and free 4WD tracks, and am keen to try the new SkyTrek.
