Checking the Oil??

So after reading all the stuff on oil I checks mine (ST1100). Hmmm I says can't see if it needs oil cause theirs nothing in the window. So me being an expert thinks it needs some oil so in the oil go's and still nothing????
So I decides that maybe for some reason theirs way too much in their, so I carcks the drain plug and out it comes. Found out I need a bigger bucket. So theirs heaps of oil in the bucket, heaps on the floor of the gargage I looks at the window and all good?????? Ahhhh I thinks, maybe the other night when I stopped at that servo in the middle of nowhere, checked me oil because of all the posts on the stuff, found out it was a touch on the low side, shouldn't of just emptied the bottle in and headed off.
Yeah still put the old oil back in cause it was still slippery, never changed the Oil filter, but I did learn I need a bigger bucket and maybe next time just top the oil up to the level in the window and not just pour the oil in and head off

A tip for you Terry, if the bike is on the side stand and you can see a smidgen of oil in the window, then there is plenty in the engine. Use a torch to light it up. If the window (bike on centre stand) is black then there is too much in there, if the black line is between the bottom of the window and mid way, then it has plenty.

To adjust the level down place a drain pan under the engine, put on a rubber glove, remove the drain plug carefully and allow a litre out replce drain plug loosley, check level. If high repeat drain, if ok tighten drainplug, remove oil and pan, trip on tools and spill oil. Get a beer and clear head.  Return and clean up mess and tools, wipe under engine pan, double check drain plug is tight.

Have another beer to celebrate another job well done without personal injury.

I have given up checking mine as it stays about the same - never check it on any trips.  If it is reasonable before I leave I check it when I get home perhaps if I get around to it.  If you change it every 20,000kms or so I would check it at 10,000km intervals or so.  This is an example of what thinking does to you     Mine only has 165,000kms on it so higher mileage ones may need more attention

Mate the only reson I checked it was because of all the posts on oil. Think I'll stay to what has worked forever

The tight buggers have placed a limit of two cans to a customer, and wont take a credit card order over the phone.
What a bummer as this would be a round trip of 150 kilometers
Just to try to save a few dollars on the purchase of two cans.
I don't think that i will bother to give them my business.
For half a dozen cans ,yes.

For those that are interested  To suit the ST 1300 I have just picked up a couple of oil filters from the local Repco store , they are  the ROF135 (can use Z436) for $8.75 each. This is their standard pricing.
however I don't know what the price would be for the Z436

Hate to see a man hanging from his suspenders.  Come to think of it, the only bloke I know who still wears suspenders is Diesel, and that image is rather whimsical.

I just noticed the topic heading about oils.  Couch and George seem to have drifted off-topic somehow.

That reminds me of something to remember if you're changing the oil in an ST13 for the first time.
No matter how hard you try, some oil will always hit the right centre stand leg when you pull the oil filter.  I've seen ingenious deflectors made with aluminium foil, absorbers made with rags and barriers of cardboard.
Do what you can to be prepared for it and work out your own strategy to minimise the mess.
