Another terrible day for fighting fires predicted today!

All best wishes to the heroes on the front line, and the families that have been/will be affected under the circumstances.      :-++ :-++ :-++

Don't know what to think about the kids they've arrested for lighting fires.

Rained a bit here, but unfortunately strong gusty winds today which is not good for the fires.

I got back earlier this afternoon from 3 days at Singleton.
Working along a ridge (backburning) at Mt Tangory in 42 degrees on Monday was far from a pleasant scenario but it seems we have put a lid on a fire of about 850 hectares.
We could not have controlled the burn without the help of a couple of helicopters, yesterday we had 3 of them and they were on a 3 minute rotation meaning about 60 drops of water (each 1300 litres) per hour.  Due to the conditions we had to be right on the scene of any "spotovers" and not delay getting them out which meant that on one occasion I was "bombed" by the helicopter.  That was a new experience.

He probably saw that you needed the refreshment!  Dehydration would be a real danger.
Goodonya for getting out there.    :thumb

You would have thought they would have stayed away from the sewerage farm, wouldn't you?

The upside is that the regrowth after the fire will be fantastic.

I am just glad that while there has been property loss, there has been no serious loss of life, as we have to many ASH storys in our history now, big thumbs to everyone who have helped keep Joe Public safe  :thumb

Sadly we've lost a pilot.
Water bombing is one of the most dangerous flight regimes possible- very low visibility, heavy turbulence, nearby air traffic, heavy loads, fast turn-arounds, very low level flying.
Many serious hazards on their own, all encountered in the same environment.

Salute.

Commiserations to his family.

Amazing Drone footage

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1EAp_NhbF68

Certainly a great demo of the drone's capabilities.  ABC 7:00 News used a bit of that clip tonight- the Zig-Zag railway conduit and the burnt out industrial building segments.
Hopefully it can gather useful info to help the fire fighters, rather than just show how it can fly through abandoned buildings.
