Title: BigTed's Lap of Oz - tent time...
Post by: BigTed on May 13, 2017, 06:16:12 PM
hi all - it's time to look at tents. In my ride to Adelaide a few years ago I used a Wander Pod 3 tent, which was fine. It's a typical dome tent where poles are threaded diagonally through the main tent part, then a fly is clipped over the top. Not bad really.
However, for my 65 night lap of Oz (with trailer), I'm thinking about an upgrade. I quite like Shiney's Redverz I saw in Adelaide - the current model seems to be the Atacama: https://www.adventuremoto.com.au/rzg-tn3-redverz-atacama-expedition-motorcycle-tent (https://www.adventuremoto.com.au/rzg-tn3-redverz-atacama-expedition-motorcycle-tent)
Of course, you get what you pay for - and at $745 I think you get a lot. However, I wonder if there's anything else out there for comparison.
What I like is:
Anyway - what experience/recommendations have you got that's worth considering... I wait in anticipation!

I'm not sure of your trailer size or space but how about a 4WD Touring tent in the 9ft Model ??

We had one of the original Southern Cross ones pre-kids....

Single centre pole, Canvas, internal floor space 9x9 and about 7ft High in the middle....most have a attached vestibule awning now (ours didn't)

Set up time about 1-2 mins incl awning....centre pole, and 4 pegs and another 2 poles and 2 pegs for the awning.

They are about 15kg and now the trailer issue.....about 800mm X 800mm and 120mm high packed size.

I think oztrail make a copy of the Southern Cross  :think1 about $300 (ish)

Only real problem with a canvas tent or even single skin synthetic tent is they can wick a little if you pack it up wet to setup later that day......hence the fly seperate is a good option  ;-*

Cheers

It wouldn't work  methinks - I've just got a cargo pod on a frame. It's secure and watertight, but that's it.

On our various travels, I've found problems with being able to get the pegs into the ground in some places. For this reason my latest purchase was a '"companion pro hiker" dome style tent because they dont need them. I actually bought the larger one so that we would have more space and it fits in the top box of the ST.

I have a 3 person dome tent and for one person has plenty of room and I don't see the need to have anything larger. It also has front and rear entrance so one end can be used for storage (Esky etc.) if needed.

We do have a larger (enough height for Heather to stand up) dome tent but it needs two people to put it up so it only gets used when we need the two of us camp overnight or longer.

The Redverz is AWESOME (but expensive :eek)
It sets up & packs down fairly quickly and it is great to be able to stand up inside the tent :grin

I say go for it as it'll be a great tent for the trip and beyond :thumbsup

Cheers

On my tours around Oz  I've used a Black Wolf Gobi three man tent.   It's nowhere as big as the one you are looking at, but worked for me and all my junk, and took up half the room in one of the panniers.   See http://www.blackwolf.com.au/product/Gobi/119 (http://www.blackwolf.com.au/product/Gobi/119)
