Title: Archery
Post by: StinkyPete on April 18, 2021, 09:16:46 AM
I got into archery a couple of years ago.   It meets my competative drive, and it's a great way to improve my upper body strength, which has taken a beating in recent yers.  Archery has many different disciplines  and styles, and I'm casually shooting 3D at a local range in the hills just 20 minutes from home.   Archery Park is a lovely a bush setting, with four walking courses through the valleys and scrub,  so its a bit like golf.

Here's my kit or the techincally inclined....
PSE Stinger compound bow @ 40#
Axcel Rheotech 5 pin sight
QAD HDX dropaway rest
DeadCentre 9" Stabilizer
Scott Shark Index release

A month ago I joined "Eden Field Archers" just down the road from home, and it's a full on competition club.   I was keen to test myself again other archers.  The club is in a bush setting and we shoot at targets in the bush, placed at ranges from 10 to 60 meters.

I'm doing OK and am not making a fool of myslef with some quite respectable scores.   Today I shot 507 out of a possible 560, good enough to get some congratulations from the top shooters who were scoring around 535.

I've been shooting a PSE beginner compound with a single pin hunting sight, but am also setting up another compound as a pure target kit.    Perhaps we could head up to Archery Park one day and go for a walk and a shoot.

I'm looking for some help from someone who's good with MS Excel, so have a look at the attached image of a target bow front sight.  The rear sight is a peep.

The target "head" can be moved up and down to correspond to the distance that I'm shooting, and the 0-100 marks are arbitary numbers to which I can set the sight for the distance that I'm shooting.  ie 15 meters =11  25 meters = 17.5  and 50 meters =38.2 and so on.  ( I have the numbers every five meters fro 10 - 60 meters)

I have determined the sight marks for every 5 meters, by careful shooting of groups and noting the mumber, and reckon by plotting the curve of distance against the sight marks it shoud be possible to calculate the intermediate distances, say every two meters.   Such a thing is beyond my level of skill and knowledge and was hoping someone may be able to help me.

PM is you reckon you can help, and I'll send you some numbers.

Pete, I should be able to help.

Create a table of the numbers
Graph the table
Add a trendline/curve fit
Reveal the variables

Alternatively there are a few functions  which can determine slope and offset.

I like an add-in called XlxtraFun which makes getting the variables very easy.

Now we need to see how the actual results match predictions..
Title: Re: Archery

Now we need to see how the actual results match predictions..

I've spent a few days on the range testing Gadget's spreasheet/predictions.    The outcome is that I've achieved more accurate results from a manually plotted A4 graph on which I've joined the known settings with straight lines, and used that plot to determine the settings for other distances.   This has proved to be more accurate "in the field" than Gadget's predictions from his excellent Excel Spreadsheet.  Thanks so much for the effort you put in to producing the spreadsheet.

I also shot a competition yesterday (Saturday) which involved shooting 112 arrows at numerous intermediate distances through a bush course.  I needed predicted settings, over and above my sight settings which have been experimentally and accurately determined for every 5 meters.   I shot a 505/560, on challenging small targets, at ranges from 5-50 meters, and beat some of our club's top archers.   The best archer on the day shot a 540/560, and he's a State champion level archer.  For almost half the round I was neck and neck with the 16 year old State Junior Champion, but I got tired and she didn't.  :fp

I'll have to post some photos of me in action on the course.

Well done, a bit more practice and you will be up in the top runnings.

P.S. did you ever see a promo bit of stuff on kevin Costners version of Robin Hood??

A reporter asked him is he could actually use his long bow??  Answer was "sure I can"
He was asked if he could hit three balls hanging in front of a building some distance away again, sure..

He lined up, drew back and loosed the arrow, direct hit.... Asked if he could do it again, he said "got it the first time, dont have to do it again"

Hitting anything with an English Longbow is a black art, and to watch them shoot well, with no sights and bare fingers is a joy.    On our target compound bows we have cams that can drop the holding weight from 60 to 10 pounds, rear peep sights, fully adjustable front sights, hand held trigger releases, and arrows that are balanced to within an inch of their lives.

I've been doing pretty well at my archery recently, as I've been putting in the time at home as well as my local range, and participating most weekends in club competitions.
There are four disciplines of competition....   Outdoor Target, Indoor Target, Field and Clout, and I shoot mainly Field.
In fact I've done so well that in Field Archery in my age division (Veteran) that I am currently ranked 2/26 in the State.     :hatwave
I would hasten to add that there are plenty of better shooters in other age divisions.  :p  and I'm currently ranked 17/179 overall.

Here's a couple of photos of me in action at my local Field Archery Club today.

For extra info about what I'm shooting see  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBtIXhcX5QE&ab_channel=AidanLangley (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBtIXhcX5QE&ab_channel=AidanLangley)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NP6XAfrYqC0&ab_channel=BigFella (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NP6XAfrYqC0&ab_channel=BigFella)

We shoot rounds of 28 targets, from distances of 10-60 meters and on different size target faces depending upon the distance.   Three arrows per target, and each arrow scores from 6 for central bull to 1 at the very outer ring (which means you should have stayed home)  :grin   making a max possible points of 18 per target or 432 for the round.

In our club, only 11 shooters in the 60 year history of the club have shot 400 points or better.
