Title: Fuel Additives
Post by: sonicpelican on November 02, 2012, 11:58:18 AM
Hey all,

Last time I had my bike serviced they cleaned the injectors siting they were a bit fouled up (30,000km service).  Performance was certainly improved.  However on that note does anyone use an additive to prevent fouling of or to clean the injectors?  I've been loathed to add anything to the tank other than 95/98 petrol.

Cheers,
Rod.

Putting an occasional Injector / carb cleaner in your fuel isnt going to hurt.

If you keep a record of your fuel usage, you should be able to notice a change in trend over time.

How did they determine the injectors were dirty?? Did they pull them, or did they just put some cleaner through and charge you for it??

Thanks Brock.  Honestly I don't know how they did it.  I expect they just ran some injector cleaner through it, it was a $12 charge against the service.  The 30,000Km service is a very minor service but there was definitely a noticeable performance increase.

Any recommendations of injector cleaners??  I see Nulon "Petrol Injector Cleaner" contains naphtha, petroleum, and hydrodesulfurised heavy naphthalene whereas something like Wynns "Complete Fuel System Cleaner" and "Petrol Injector Cleaner" have fuel oil no. 2, naphtha petroleum, and light aromatic solvent.

Cheers, Rod.

Winston 66
Injector Cleaner
I have been using The Industrial Chemical Technologies Brand  called F-10 for quite a few years.
The last one litre bottle I purchased cost $39-00 at the local stock agents, It says that  for general treatment a one litre will treat 40,000 litres and that for an injector clean just add 200 mil to an 80 litre tank.
As an all purpose fuell additive I have had excellent results in all of the vehicles that I have used it in these range from my two bikes , one carburated and the ST1300 with injectors ,The Statesman and a variety of other vehicles including Diesels and older cars such as VN Commodors.
It does an excellent job if you have to remove any built up carbon deposits when cleaning enjine parts.
It is available in smaller quantities from most motor parts suppliers such as Auto One Repco and or Super Cheap.
Hope that this is of some help.
The container does not give any indication as to the formulation of the product.

Thanks Winston 66.  I wasn't aware of the ICT range of products until now.  I've had a look at their website, http://www.ictproducts.com/ (http://www.ictproducts.com/) and the appear to have a good range of automotive products.  I think I'll give them a go and at the same time support an Australian company.

Cheers, Rod.
