Title: Tim Masterson's Rally Leg Plan Tool ( excel spreadsheet )
Post by: tj189 on May 31, 2013, 12:07:42 PM
Here is a link to the above spreadsheet for those interested in planning.  It could be used for a single ride as as the heading suggests for rallies,
enjoy

I usually use google maps and log way points into my GPS for route planning.

The spread sheet I might take a look at and see how it works.

To me it looks like a lot of work just to get on the bike and go for a ride.

For me, I look at the distance to the destination, guestimate how long it will take me to get there, calculate the departure time and add the amount of time (in minutes that I was early last time diveded by 2). I know that some how, I will still be 30min ahead of every one else  :||||

I see what it is for, it is not really for your run of the mill ride, it is designed if your doing a specific time and distance and want to work it down to the minute, have saved it as i am going to work on my IBA1600km at the moment, i think it will come in handy!

Thanks Streak.

For those that missed this sentence:

Please note that some people love using spreadsheets and others loathe and ridicule their use, may I ask that comments be positive or more importantly ,advising of any errors you find so that I may attempt to fix them for everyone.

 :|||| :|||| :|||| why do I bother

Thats a great resource TJ  :thumbs

Lionel has put together a basic excel spreadsheet of some FarRides I have done with him, and they are invaluable for setting the benchmark for where you should be by when.  It is not hard and fast, but if you deviate too much the IBA/FarRide is toast as time is hard to make up when lost.

Doing multiple IBA/FarRides on the same trip calls for a whole new world of planning pain to get the job done.

For just going on a bit of  a ride, I do a lot rougher planning of course, as it is more a matter of where do I have to be by when, without having to meet particular time/distance goals.

I am doing the Bundaberg FarRide next week so will give it a try. Only a 1200 but still a test (I am hoping Streak and Diesel will do most of the work and I will tag along!)

I played around with for a little while but not knowing what some of the terms mean and the information needed to be placed makes it hard. Might have to have the read me page open on Heather's PC while I work through it on mine.

I must admit some of the planning on the shorter rides that I have done has been a bit rough as well but using the spreadsheet (no matter which one) in my mind ads to the training side of doing the longer and multiple day rides.
Hopefully I will catch up with you next week  :beer

I am just deciding whether it will be a lunch and continue on to finish the 1200, or a stop over for the night. I should know by the time I get there   :crazy

Thanks for putting up this link TJ.. :beer

I know sometimes it al seems frustrating but your efforts are of help to some of us.

These tools are a huge bonus for the IBA/IBR or FarRallyist to rework a route at very short notice. That's the thing. Background your ride, note your research and then load it in this SpSh.
Should you need to make changes to your route at some point during the ride then Its not the disaster it could have been.

And like all things of worth...you get out what you put in. And the more you use i, the more it makes sense.

I looked at it again last night and worked through to adding the map source data into the yellow boxes. Put the way points in but can't see where to input the km data etc between way points. Early days yet.

Alan, doesn't that happen automatically? have you put all the data into the Rally package Data area? and possibly the Leg Porfile sheet?

Gatey - thanks

Going through the far rider post I note that mapsource and basecamp are suggested so it won't work with google maps. So that be the issue.

Also I may have an earlier version of Excel which is not able to use some functions available on later versions.
