Clutch problems !!
« on: August 16, 2020, 11:21:07 AM »
Hi Everyone,
This morning I decided to take my 1999 ST1100A  (41K on the clock) out for a run after a 3 week spell, soon as I put it into gear I noticed it wanted to move slowly even with the clutch lever fully in, didn't think to much of it, went approx 500 metres and into 3rd gear then there was no clutch at all and I could not get into any gear, managed to get home.  seem like clutch is engaged all the time (when I got home I could smell clutch burning) and the clutch lever is very weak as though it is in all the time !

knowing nothing about motorcycles I down loaded a service manual, and I notice my problem comes under Clutch Drag, and it could come under any of 9 problems causing this issue!
Should I have ago at Bleeding the Clutch hydraulics first you think ? then change the oil as it was serviced by the previous owner just before I picked it.

Your thoughts and expertise would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like the clutch needs the fluid replaced, it may be contaminated with water or have a big air bubble int the system.

Its pretty easy to do, only needs an 8 or 10mm spanner and a bleed kit and a new bottle of fluid.

Just need to drop the bottom fairing to get at the bleed nipple.

Thanks again Brock for your help and guidance mate,
Bled & replaced all the fluid in the hydraulics of the clutch (certainly was air in the lines) and all working great, just took it out for a test run of about 60k no problems.

Cheers Dutchy

Yay.

I love it when a plan works. Two goals achieved here, getting the clutch fixed and you gaining confidence to perform your own work.
