Fitting StarCom components to Shoei TZ-X Helmet
« on: August 30, 2013, 01:25:20 PM »
I'm chipping away at fitting my StarCom system.    Can anyone advise if the chinpiece polystyrene foam liner on a Shoei TZ-X helmet can be removed to enable me to conceal speaker/microphone wires?   It came out OK from my old and now retired X-Eleven, but the TZ-X seems to be a different type of chinpiece fit.  The instruction book gives no hint.

Hi Pete,

I have the TZ-X with the Sena SMH10. This helmet only allows the removal of the cheekpads and nothing else - the rest is all glued in.

The speaker wire runs behind the cheekpads then (the right) runs around the back at the bottom. Soon after I bought my helmet I also bought a wind-breaker that fits the to the underside of the helmet and provides a more snug fit around the neck (elastic). The wire for my right speaker sits under this so is not exposed.

As far as the microphone is concerned, my Sena has a flexible but rigid boom mic that enters from under the bottom left side of the helme and then sits in place at the front. I don't have to lift foam or anything.

I'll grab some photos in a mo and post them up.

More.

Two mics. Left one is for the Sena, right is for the video camera (which I bought off eBay for $4, and is too short so I needed to use some tape to hold it down.

The Sena mic (left) sits there and doesn't move... held in place by the left cheek pad. You can pucker your lips as much as you like but you still can't "kiss" the mic... ie. it's not pressin gup against your mouth.

Sena mounting - note I've had to cut the black trim directly under the Sena unit to make sure it's a snug fit. The boom then feeds forward and under the chin curtin and behind the cheek pad.

IMHO, while the TZ-X is a great helmet, it's design is not optimal for a headset like this. I assume you'll have similar "fun" with the StarCom.

How sad to have to retire your X-Eleven :'(.............definitely one of Shoei's best helmets ever.

I still have mine in use after seven years, and hopefully for many more years to come! :grin

The X-Eleven was the noisiest bloody helmet I ever owned, but was never going to ditch it prematurely as it cost so much.   I've now done about 50,000km with it and it's got a bit loose, so it's time was up.   It was so noisy that on occasions, and despite wearing ear plugs, I stuck gaffer tape over the vents and joints just to shut it up.

Thanks to info from BigTed and a call from ST2UP I've got the Starcom Headset installed in the TZ-X.   I finished up pushing the wires into the area between the shell and polystyrene foam chin bar with a plastic spatula.   I'll keep an eye on it and if it looks like coming loose a bit of hot glue may be in order.

Well I'll be buggered, I find mine very quiet with very little wind noise. I have 3 Shoei's and prefer wearing the X-Eleven.

Maybe your ears are bigger than mine Stinky Pete!!  ha!  :rofl
