Noggins - What helmet do you wear and why?
« on: November 01, 2013, 04:52:15 PM »
I have a fairly new Nolan 102 Systems helmet with Ncom communication system, this is my third N102.
Used to have a Shoei Syncrotec I  think it was called, great but hexy.
However now the Nolan N104 is out, naturally just to bugger one about :nahnah, they have made it so that the N102 comms system is incompatible. :crackup'
I have been trying to buy a N102 in white (cooler for summer) but they are as scarce as the proverbial rocking horse droppings. :||||
My current helmet is black and last summer I sweltered in it. :H
Read a write up in Riding On about the Zeus Adventure helmet which tested well ,even at speed on a VFR1200 and has that peak for riding east or  west at the wrong time of day.

I use a Nolan 104 however I have never been a fan of their comms systems as I believe that that are way overpriced. You are correct in that the comms system has now changed and doesn't fit the 104.
Out of the two 102 and 104 I believe the 102 is the better helmet. I find the 104 fogs up all the time despite fitting the interior screen. The 102 never fogged up.
So, I guess I didn't really help.

Shoei GT-Air. Not cheap but worth every cent. Comfortable and lite and does not fog up with the internal screen thingy fitted. I use the Sena SMH10 Comms units and they are fantastic. The wife wears a Shark helmet and wants to go tot he Shoei. The internal visor also is great, especially as I wear glasses which negates the need for sunnies. Overall, a good package.

Shoei TZ-X, because I prefer a full-face,  it fits my head really well, and is very comfortable on the long hauls.

I use a shark evoline 3, as it gives you the option of running as a fullface in hot weather, and is certified to do that. I have a shark evoline 2, but it is nowhere near as good as the 3.  It would not be as quiet as a good fullface, but I wear earplugs after too many years riding without them (and perhaps lound rock concerts did not help)

I have a white Nolan 104.  Love it, the sun visor is great for our wet season, means no stuffing round with sunnies.  I ride solo, so comms aren't a problem, I just use earbuds for music.  The shape of the 104 fits my head comfortably.  Previous helmet was a HJC IS16, loved that too, my son now wears it on the rare occasions he comes out with me.

I'm thinking that fogging is not such an issue in Darwin.

When you say light, do you know the actual weight of the helmet without the coms fitted? I am searching for a lighter helmet  due to a neck problem. Tried google to find a carbon fibre helmet, or part carbon fibre, mostly overseas helmets and therefore non compliant with 1698.

I wear a TSS tourer flip up now, I bought it as it had the functions I got used to with my Shark Evoline 2 but with out the weight and noise.

I got a Shoei XR-1100 a year ago in the pursuit of quietness.  Not cheap, but pretty good.  I'm not sure it's four times better than a Nolan at 4 times the price.
The pinlock anti-fog is amazing.  But it does reduce the light transmission a little bit.

Looking at a Shark Evo3. They have then at 10% off at helmet house this week as a show special. Price is $540. Is this worth while our the RJays at $200? I like how the chin bar flips back still allowing visor down on the shark. Also easy to get glasses in.

Thanks for that, did you find the weight difference from the Shark evoline 2 significantly different? My Nolan N102 weighs 1795g without the comms system, and I find that is getting too heavy for me. I have had serious spinal injuries in the past and now closing the big 70 I am noticing the aftermath.  Must say I like the price of the TSS.

No mine isn't the carbon helmet, I bought mine when we were away on the bike due to the weight and noise of the shark 2 (which is fixed in the shark3). We didn't have a lot of choice where we were at the time and we were looking for a Shoei, but this just felt right.

Noticed the Tourtech lighter straight away, the TSS is on special now at MCAS now for $149  :eek down from $249

Can of you blokes/girls tell me the weight of the Shark Evoline 3 helmets? Interestingly enough an article I read where blokes doing a survey in Oz ,took a set of scales with them to the dealers and most helmets were up to 300grams heavier than the manufacturers claimed weights :-(((

After a lot of research I finally found RKOH helmets. Used to be known around Canberra as Marinko.
Marinko is actually the bloke that sells these Carbon Fibre Helmets and they weigh 1300 grams :clap and that is no misprint.
If your cranium fits a KBC HJC or M2R full face then his helmets will fit you. Tyres for Bikes at Albion in Brisbane is one retailer of these  helmets.
Much to my disappointment there is not enough chin space in the above three helmets so the KROH helmets are a no go. :||||
So then I looked at what some of the enlightened ones  :-++on this forum were wearing and tried a Shark Evo 3 on :Blow.
Well there wasn't the sound of a brass band but there probably should have been, I could not believe the lack of weight, the size of the shell and the comfort, I had looked at an Evo 2 some time ago. Absolute chalk and cheese.
really appreciated the input by one and all,I just have to wait for them to order in the one I want.
