the national standard differs in places from the WA one

Not quite correct, The National Standard remains the same every where, though interpretations of the Standard may vary .

Miy trailer has been built to the Standard, after all it needs to be inspected before I can get it registered.

Interpretation
thats the term i was looking for
VSB1 gives axle position relevant to body with a stipulation for tare ball weight  (which is different for bike trailers)
my local inspection station (the guy who is essential to getting the piece of paper to register it with) wasnt having any of that crap
didnt matter what the ball weight was fact is the axle was 20mm to far forward
even though the trailer was balanced perfectly for 5% ball weight
he wanter me to rip the axle mounts off and move it rearwards
ended up putting a PVC pipe on the front of the body
and for an additional inspection fee he called that part of the body and passed it
thank god for capitalism  :hatwave

There is no way that I could get about 20Kg on the ball, as the chassis only weighs about 25Kg  +(minus the wheels). I think the axle is in the right place length wise, and is towball heavy.

So long as the axle center is greater than half way down the length of the body (not the trailer) youve got no problems
mine was a smidge forward of center and no matter what i said about ball mass he wpuldnt budge
hence the re work

Blackduck was he referring to the ball weight or length behind the axle?

The length of trailer behind the axles must be no more than 60% of the distance between the ball and the centre of axle, or 3.5m, which ever is shorter.  After this the ball weight consideration is due.

Unless this has changed without my knowledge.

In 2009 at the Penrith Ulysses AGM I purchased a camper trailer very similar to Blackduck's project, and towed it behind a Honda 900 Hornet with very little trouble either uphill or down.
The trailer was all steel with a solid axle with leaf springs, and measured 5' X 3' X 1'. The tailgate swung outwards and was wide enough for me to mount a 2 burner gas stove.
All up it weighed 153 kg, with 15 kg on the ball.
The only disadvantage was the lack of a dressing room as you can see in the photos.
I had mounted a teensy gas bottle behind the left mudguard, with two 5 litre water bottles in front on both sides. I even went so far as to get a 30cm port-a-potty which just fitted.

I also had an Esky mounted on the front between the tow ball and trailer. In the following photo, you can just make out the mount:

The whole setup also included a flat canvas awning as you can see in the next pic:

There is one quite similar on eBay:

so with a semi killer hangover on a bright sunday morning what better time to drag out the grinder and upset the neighbors
step one pull everything off (check)
step 2 cut 6" off the top of the box in such a way as you can rescue the top and glue it back on (check)
it feels lighter already
and that pounding noise in my head has been replaced by the sound of tortured metal

Managed to get a tad done today
decided to go with independent suspension after some deliberation on beam axles and weight
found the cutest little shocks on evil bay
wasnt sure at first (the old buyer beware thing) but when they turned up i put my bulk on them and they hardly mooved
so its swing arms manufactured all i have to do is put it all on straight

The swing arms are a bit heavier than necessary, but they wont break in a hurry.

theyre only made from 50x25x1.5 so they dont weigh much at all, compared to the 17kg beam axle
im thinking with this mod and re doing the draw bar i can chop 30kg of it
ill be happy with that  :grin

suspension mounted
ended up with a perpendicular mounted shock for better load transfer
makes the trailer ride a tad higher but some constructive tow frame work will overcome that
so far so good
its amazing just how light these things are
i rekon about 6kg per side with hubs on
better than the 17kg axle it replaced

got the draw bar done finally
note the discrete fall away to marry to the back of the bike without compromising suspension travel
the square thing holds the esky
and theres even a little bit of room for a small gas bottle holder if need be

Figured out the stabilisers
went off the shelf for the free side - a tad heavy but versatile and will offer good support
for the bed end i had to get inventive
dont really trust fold out tents I guess the hinge is designed to work its just something about it just sitting there in space
the concept is, the extension comes out, the leg goes down and there is a stay to support the bed base
of course its upside down so youll have to stand on your head to view the pics
