the light appears at the end of the tunnel
proving im a much better fabricator than painter i put on my NASPA hat (not a spray painters asshole) and proceeded to cover everything i own in a fine mist of gloss black
Today was spent bolting stuff on
only the tent top to go
I pinched the dragons bathroom scales and got a gestimation on weight - I reckon ill come out around the 120 ish mark

Yes
it is  a tad large and a tad heavy at 7kg
but there is very little choice of swiveling hitches that are fully compliant for registration purposes
all the el cheapos off evil bay dont have the mandatory compliance stamps
but its a good strong hitch and rock solid, all the articulation is in the uni joint so you dont have to worry about tow balls

i can build just about anything you want for a small fee
lets say cost plus your first born  :grin
unfortunately the camper top size is pretty standard but im sure we can minimise weight with some more creative design

Dragged it away for the weekend including about 30K of dirt road.
didnt go to bad and i think most of it will be sorting the weight distribution

got held up for a few weeks due to the dragon insisting we spend some time with the grand kids and one very drunken diving weekend in Dunsburough

but now its done - custom wind deflectors and all
final test run next weekend
bike, trailer, dragon the lot

My understanding is that it depends on the material the.
The trailer hitch is made out of.
Most hitches appear to be of cast iron and not of a carbon steel construction.
Subsequently the cast type of hitch will have mounting bolt holes  provided for fastening to a suitable base plate which should already be welded to the trailer draw bar
The pressed steel type of hitch will more readily accept welding to the draw bar, and I can  sometimes be bolted. also.
To perform properly , cast iron needs a more specialty type of process and procedure to safely and adequately weld it satisfactorily.

Sorry I just read the question again, I did not answer it properly, My mistake,
I guess that the ADR's exist so that there is some uniformity in the construction standards for builders to confirm to.
It is most likely than some constructors could be lax in their building of things if there were not some pre ordained standards and then it would be quite possible that inferior and dangerous things would be used on the roads and the the general population could be exposed to some measure of un acceptable risk because of someones shonky work.
A trailer hitch has to essentially perform  to a much higher level  of stress during its operation  and than might be required for a more simple type of welded joint  that would be required in the construction of a simple chassis.
Just my 2c. worth.

Not every one has the skills to do the welding in a high stress area properly. The regs mind you are aimed at trailers pulled behind cars/trucks, that carry a ton (tonne) or five. Trailers for use behind a bike werent thought about when the standards were written.

and believe me during the roadworthy inspection they went over that hitch with a fine tooth comb
every stipulation and marking in the standard was checked
in fact he spent more time checking the hitch than the rest of the trailer
then he failed it and asked for another $60



I had to go for a great lump of a cast jobbie for rego
now its got plates I could throw any old evil bay junk on it
but i kinda like the solidness of it

Mine still has the original hitch that Classic put on it when it was built in 1988 and I guess with vehicle standards it meets the requirements in force (if any) at time of manufacture which still makes it legal. The tongue coupling is rated at 1 tonne for a 90kg trailer with a 200kg load rate.

The issue is or situation is build the trailer and weld a box section to the draw bar. have another box section with the coupling or hitch bolted or welded to that then link the two with a high tensile bolt and castellated nut as the swivel if that makes sense. It would only swivel in one direction or do I need to actually have a solid connection from draw bar to the hitch. That is no swivel.
This way I am still using a compliant hitch and I am welding everything else like axles, chassis etc.

Another idea as a safety solution is turn down a section of the bolt creating a groove and put a bolt in the square section or even a u bolt as a collar in unison with the nut to prevent the two from separating.

The whole idea of the swivel hitch on a motorcycle trailer is to allow for the action of a motorcycle when cornering so the coupling must allow the bike to rotate in relation to the trailer when the bike leans L or R which also allows for the same action to occur on the trailer and not cause a bike to tip over if a wheel drops in a pot hole for example.
 
The vertical movement (e.g. up and down a drive way at gutter point) can be quite easily handled by the coupling on the ball like it does on a car etc.
