Two Johns and a Dicky at the First OzSTOC National Rally in Blackheath NSW in April 2012.  The John closest to camera was from Orange and duly noted for driving the ST1100 engined JZR 3 wheeler to the Rally... He was even MORE duly noted for supplying the flagon of cheap sherry that eventually lead to the bum burning fiasco in Cabin 5 later that night. All three in this pic were witnesses.     :butt

Chris took this at the Nambucca Heads FarRide in early 2015.

Streak, Saaz, me and Capt Thunderbolt (Nev)

This was outside Anchors Warf Cafe in Urunga that we shared more Breakfasts with Saaz than I can remember. Saaz is wearing we believe the most traveled OzSTOC Jacket in the club.

Mornin' All...

Thank You Lionel for our last post and for keeping me in-the-loop with the many text messages over the past weeks, much appreciated.
Thank you Terry for company and ear over recent weeks and especially the other weekend at Balranald, again much appreciated. And
Thank you Barry for getting John out n about in those early years, Those Snowy Rides.

I had been getting to know John for the best part of 18 years beginning with emails and discussions, of all things,  ST1100 steering head bearings, the odd email which I still have and with one of the last topics I spoke with John about was his Cystic Fibrosis (CF).  I had learnt of John suffering from CF a couple of years back when he and Gina spent some time here in Melbourne.  It'd be fair to say that I gleamed my largest slice of understanding of what made John tick earlier this year when I spent a few days as his guest and during the course of an afternoon which evolved into an evening and continued into a the small hours of the next morning, during which the topic of CF came up. I won't go into the detail, but suffice to say John was well aware that CF had labelled him with a use-by date. Now, if I had to use just one word to sum up who John Nagle was, it would be without doubt or hesitation, John epitomised a pragmatism.

I am in no doubt that John was fully aware that he was nearing his use-by date, he knew and evaluated the consequences  of the rides he undertook, which included his last, which we spoke of at length in March this year.

SAAZ is a verity of hops, or perhaps as the Czech's (from which the name derives), would like us say, Saaz is a noble variety of hops used in Lagers and Pilsner beers which by far John's favourite drop, though John was known to imbibe pretty much anything containing ethyl alcohol as the arse-burning post at the top of this page attests.  But for the discerning  of you people heading to the Northbridge Brewing Co, may wish bear this in mind when you point your finger at the lovely array of coloured labels on top of the handles that display their fine brewed drops and say, "I'll have one of your fine Lagers please".

John and moi' a few months ago at my place imbibing on mutual ground, Sharaz

Ciao, the can :-)

Saaz was always extremely generous with his time, here is is working on my ST1300, installing my towbar and driving lights with Terrys Help

They did assure me at the time, that it had less to do with seeing me, and more to do with the pork roast with all the trimmings that Teela was cooking for them....

Saaz always tried to get me to ride this stretch from Bright to Lakes Entrance. Well... it is one of the GREAT rides one can do in this country, and I fervently recommend it to anyone....

Here we are stopped for brekky at the Omeo Bakery - as you do apparently. Pictured R to L are Saaz, Rocky Rural and Growly...

EDIT: When we stopped for fuel at Lakes Entrance... Rocky Rural put in over 2L more fuel than I did for the same run... I thought it may have been because he rode with the screen fully up the entire time... not sure though.

Saw the sight of Saaz in my mirrors for thousands of clicks over the years....

Guess it was because he only had three cylinders and found it hard keeping up....

This was heading towards Malacoota.

I thought I would drop a short line having met John a couple of years ago at the Border and then this year as a riding companion on his last big adventure. The WA group also had a dinner in Perth and we showed him the site of Perth at night from the hills that we will ride in March next year. We will miss his enthusiasm for the club but rest assured he will not be forgotten.
Condolences to his family and riding mates

Got this one at Harrietville immediately after the devastating bushfires that went through there in 2013. We and Growly were the lucky last the road crew let through before they closed it off for repairs. Next stop Mt Hotham....

Some of the gang at Robe SA. You can see Saaz's ST11 at the rear of the queue and Sarge's 11 with trailer in front of it.

From L to R is Sarge, Saaz and the famous pairing of Tipsy and his Rhonda whom we met up with in Mt Gambier just prior....

PitSTop and I were overseas on a cruise when we got the news. Home now and its hard to fathom our great Mate has ridden on to ride the roads in the big sky.  :'(

I first met John at the first Nat Rally in 2012 and we had some great chats, over some nice reds, over the following years. A true gentleman was John, who would go out of his way to help fellow riders. He encouraged me, as I was new to riding a big tourer, with inspired words to help me to become a better rider.

I loved his dry sense of humour along with his "Muttley" style laugh and this photo from the Hill End NSW RTE portrays it beautifully.

Ride on John and RIP  :'( We will forever think of you standing in the background, laughing at the antics we are yet to get up to, wherever two or more OzSToc members gather  8)
Cheers

After the Border Run in August.....

Thanks Lionel for the update. So sad, he really was a kind a unassuming individual. Only met him a few times however his loss will be felt. Hope he is riding on wherever he is..

Reading about John reminds me of an incident from 1977.  My wife and I were on our Overseas Experience, cycling through Devon, Isle of Wight, Cornwall, and up into Wales.  We had come to an afternoon stop in the shade of a tree outside a church in the middle of nowhere looking down over the valleys in Wales when the vicar pulls up in a Morris Minor.  There'd been break ins at the church recently so he had pulled over just to say hello and check the church over.  We had a chat and then he said, "Come with me." He took us around the side of the church to the graveyard.  They'd just laid the headstone on the grave of his sexton, and it read simply,

Name
Birth and death dates
Years of service as sexton

and the line

"A gentle man"

Not "a gentleman", but "a gentle man".  Reading all the comments about John, yet not having met him myself, I feel that epitaph is appropriate for him.
At my age you realise something very important, then ten minutes later you've forgotten it.
