Hi,
Yesterday (20/12/12) I managed after several months of hesitation replaced the oil in the drive unit. It was one of those jobs I kept putting off. Honda recommends an 80 grade oil but I had a Castol EP 80W/90 at hand so I used that. So far no leaks.
I had the oil and the funnel but needed a plastic tube for the end of the funnel. Well, it's all done until I get to do it again.
Considering the bike has done 135,000 kms and the drive oil has only been changed twice. The last time at 60,000kms at one of my tyre changes done by a dealer.

The rear drive never seems to give any trouble (the splines aside if they are not maintained). It takes so little oil that I just use synthetic oil and do it every few years.

I use a syringe and synthetic gear oil on my STead.
With only needing 155ml I do mine every oil change. As the oil is draining from the engine I do the gear drive. Easy.

I use Castrol EPX 80W/90 in my final drive as well. I believe it meets the Honda standard of an 80 grade oil. I change it every 6000 k's religiously. It was explained to me that it's not necessary to be too particular in regards to whether you use synthetic or mineral oils in the final drive as the oil isn't subject to the same high temperatures and impurities that engine oils have to tolerate. As long as the oil is the correct grade and changed regularly you should have a happy and trouble free final drive.
