Cooling fan doesn't work

 So the cooling fan on my ST1100 doesn't work instead there is a switch to earth to manually turn it on, So after a bit of a search I buy replacement switch that is supposed to come on at 100 degrees as per factory switch, install it and still no cooling fan coming on automatically, so my thoughts are my new switch is a dud, $54 down the drain, the factory specs I found were wrong or my temperature gauge is not reading correctly.
So the question is how hot does it get on your temp gauge get before fan kicks in, I waited until it was almost in the red before stopping the test.

Agreed...the same issue comes up with a camper trailer and another motorbike site I am a member of...the facebook site is supposed to be a front for the main forum but people just post questions/modifications/photos etc on the facebook site rather than just use it for general chit chat. It means we lose the ability to store and have easy access to great ideas and modifications. I have unfortunately high-jacked this post but this is going to be an increasing problem methinks!

Here are the FB posts:

"It usually takes until about 3/4 of the temp gauge about where the white line is before the red zone. You could check the continuity of the wire to ground, its possible it may have a bad connection to ground. it will be the wire that doesnt have 12V on it when removed from the switch."

"Thanks if I short the wire to earth the fan works, so I figured the switch was faulty, so i took it out placed in a pot of boiling water and it switch from open circuit to 44MOhms which I figured was way to high and hence brought a new switch bit it does not appear to work either."

"Old wire can crystallise and not carry a current so well, for example old Holdens starter motors needed a relay added to work properly plus many similar examples. So rewire or add a relay."
