I'm poking around websites looking at parts that I'll need in the not too distant future and found that the part number for the front bearings on the 13 is listed as 6205UU. In checking out the suffix codes, it seems the "UU" represents "two seals", which is what "2RS" is also meant to be (specifically two rubber seals).

So, are these interchangeable? ie. can I buy 6205-2RS instead?

A bearing specialist place should be able to tell you.  The 2RS and UU are manufacturer codes, so the UU would be some Japanese manufacturer.  All the pictures I can see of the 2RS version seem ok - SKS being one.

Last time I checked a local place they could even get the two row bearing for the rear of the ST1100.  They also gave the choice of cheapest or good quality, and the price was not worth getting the cheapest.

I'd go for the 2RS (2 Rubber Seals) as I wouldn't trust the UU (Utterly Useless) bearings on my ST ;)

62052RS is a very common bearing, much better than steel sheilded bearings.
BSC (Bearing Service Company) CBC (Consolisdated bearings) and SKF are all places to buy them. Usually alot cheaper if you can get a company discount. Years ago when working for CSR we would get about 60% company discount off bearings, don't know what it is like these days.

Old thread I know, but I've been involved with bearings in an earlier life so ...

6205 is the bearing description, its a single row deep groove ball bearing, 25 mm ID X 52 mm OD x 15 mm W.

The suffixes refer to two rubber seals, 2RS is a contact seal which rubs on the flat of the inner race just like an oil seal rubs on a shaft. UU is one manufacturer's code for non-contact rubber seal (VV is used by NSK I think, there's also 2RU used by other manufacturer/s).  These usually have a split lip, and the two lips run in grooves in the inner race and don't touch the inner race at all - it's a labyrinth seal like an upside down V running in a W.  The difference is pretty esoteric, the 2RS seals give fractionally better water protection but create a small amount of friction, the UU seals can allow slight passage of water into the bearing but don't create drag.

Personally, I'd use the 6205-2RS.  Just look for an engineering supply company which is a distributor for SKF, FAG, NSK, NTN, or any other major bearing company, they'll all recognise 6205-2RS and will have them in stock.
